Apache OpenOffice (AOO) Bugzilla – Issue 14849
linux problem connecting to openoffice.org website with ECN on
Last modified: 2013-08-07 15:24:38 UTC
www.openoffice.org does not support "ecn" (explicit congestion notification protocol, rfc3168) All connection attempts to http://www.openoffice.org time out when ECN is enabled in the local tcp/ip stack. All my linux web browsers could not connect to www.openoffice.org until I found out that I had to disable ecn in my tcp stack by issuing # echo 0 > /proc/net/ipv4/tcp_ecn on a commandline as root. Why is ecn supported by www.collab.net as well as most sites I've seen so far on the web, but not by www.openoffice.org?
what kernel version and distro are you using?
accepting issue
I'm using Debian Woody, kernel 2.4.20 with XFS support.
It is supported by CN? interesting. I have raised this issue with CN's ops, most recently 6 weeks ago and they respond by saying that only a few marginal types use ECN and so it is an insignificant issue. Sun has taken this issue on to see if it can help resolve it. Adding Stefan to cc list. louis
Hi Jens (if jensja is an abbreviation for jens :-), Could you do me a favour and check www.netbeans.org? CN and Netbeans are working on a solution. Thanks, Stefan
CN implements / supports protocols based on who uses them, rather then usefulness? interesting... ;-)
I can open http://www.netbeans.org (http://s001.sfo.collab.net/) with ECN enabled. But not http://www.openoffice.org (http://s002.sfo.collab.net/). netstat -ptn shows that the browsers socket does stay in SYN_SENT state for a very long time. Now I disabled ecn again to file this report. I would like this one to be fixed because it may block site access for many linux users. And I guess some of them will give in before they find the workaround. Afair I found the hint via google in a message from a redhat user, so not only debian is affected. Jens - (you were right, Stefan :-)

I've filed internal issue 18748 for the operations group to review the problem and patch and to provide insight. I will update this issue by June 6th.

I've asked for an update on planned scheduling for this work. CN will be doing some maint. next week, and I've asked if this can be done at the same time if not sooner. I will update this issue Monday the 16th
operations is reviewing their maintenance plans for the next few weeks and will schedule an appropriate time to do this possibly in the next week. I will update this issue by 6/25 with more information
This is tentatively scheduled for our next maintenance which will be July 5th. I will update this issue on 7/7
The internal task was completed during our regular maintenance on Saturday. Reassigning to Louis for follow up.
Kenneth, Thanks! You mean then that those with ECN enabled will be able to view OOo? If so... wow, throngs, man, throngs. I presume I need do nothing particular. cheers, Louis
... besides closing the issue :-) According to http://urchin.earth.li/cgi-bin/ecn.pl?action=display&mode=fixed ECN works now.
verified and closing
What Joy! louis
