Apache OpenOffice (AOO) Bugzilla – Issue 14988
Screen image defects, particularly with smooth scrolling
Last modified: 2017-05-20 11:15:37 UTC
This is a problem that has been in Openoffice for at least version 1.0 I experience probplems with incorrect scrolling leaving image defects which are fixed in the image is refreshed. I get other screen leftovers sometimes with removing unerlining, or with the red spelling error lines although these are hard to reproduce. Smooth scrolling is particularly bad at this and is unusable. see the screen image attached. I use Linux Mandrake 9, Xfree86, version 1.03, I have a Virge GX/DX vidio card.

JA: reassigning issue. Reproducible even on WinXP. Activate "Smooth Scrooling" in "/tools/options/text document/view". Create a multi page dummy text document and click into the scoll bar: --> repaint problems. AMA said this migh be something for you...
HI->OD: It depends also from view-zoom. I could better reproduce it with 112%
OD (16.06.2003): Reproduced in internal build SRX645m5 and accepted.
SBA->OD: On my Win2k machine (P500) it scrolls too fast and brings a lot of repaint problems too. On the X systems I had a look at (Solaris8 and UnitedLinux, smooth scrolling doesn't seem to work at all in 645m9.
Screen scrolling problems in Ooo1.1RC2 Smooth Scrolling still has lots of problems. There are still screen scrolling defects (repaint issues) but it seems very sensitive to zoom settings. Under some zoom settings seem to be almost ok (e.g. the default 100%) but other zoom settings totally mess up the screen. Some times smooth scrolling works for scrolling down, but not for scrolling up. Sometimes it also works is a jerky manner suddenly speeding up for a while (almost as if there are bits it does not approve of and is skipping over them)and then reverting to the normal speed. Neither the mouse wheel nor 'Auto Scrolling' (with the special scrolling icon called up by the middle mouse key) uses smooth scrolling when it is set. It this a bug or a 'feature' of mouse use?
I have tried OOo1.1RC3 It seems a bit better, but still jumpy in parts
.
OOo1.1.0.RC4 The smooth scrolling jumpyness seems to be fixed. But there are still some small screen defects. However a big improvement on the first screen-problem.jpeg. The still seem to be two types of defects - a line or two of pixals missing (see small.jpeg) or a line or two of pixals to many - making tall characters.

According to the OpenOffice.org roadmap (http://tools.openoffice.org/releases) this issue was retargeted to OOo Later.
Error still exists - Using OOo 3.1.1 with Win Vista 32 bit and latest drivers for my Geforce 8600 Card..
I want to say that this MATTERS! If people see a defective screen image they cannot help getting a poor view of what is, at heart, a very good product. Someone PLEASE give this issue a high degree of urgency.
I will have a deeper look at this issue in the next days/weeks - please stay tuned
Every time the same problem in the last versions and now as well in OOo 3.1.1 on WIN XP. But when you have some image defects, you can push CTR+ALT+R to recalibrate the screen image. Last time I had the impression, that the problem doesn't occur so often, when I have deactivated Java runtime environment. However, I hope for a soon solution!
Investigation reveals the following: Defect cause is the special alignment of text lines in text documents to assure that neighbor text lines do not by accident overlap on certain screen positions. The scrolling does not consider/perform this alignment. Thus, sometimes a pixel line is missing or duplicated. Possible solution: Do not use intrinsic window scrolling methods, but use direct painting for scrolling through the text document.

CCing myself.
Me too, with this setup: OOO320m12 Build 9483 (BrOffice) Windows 2000 SP4 SiS660 onboard video ECS 661GX-M v1.0B mobo Celeron 2.4GHz I don't use smooth scrolling. It sometimes happens when I change fonts type, style and size (tested with Arial and Times, normal and bold, 12 and 14) or markers.
