Description rblackeagle 2003-05-28 08:16:14 UTC
We need a simpler way of changing page numbers displayed other than the clumsy
and often faulty method of adding a page break with a style. It would permit
inserting a landscape page style within normal portrait pages without losing the
pagination for surrounding (and flowing) text or leaving a space for inserted
photgraphs, etc. The current method has proven impossible to use intuitively by
normal users and difficult by experienced users.

RC3 shows that this is less of a problem as Insert > Manual Break /
Page Break / With Page Style / Page No now seems to work well (at
least I haven't been able to mess it up). It still might be useful to
have a simpler method, but this method works just fine now. Not sure
whether to cancel it or if a simpler method might actually be better.

Look at it long-term (for an enhancement "Later") and look at it from
the user's point of view. So long as no references to page numbers
are needed (that is to say, no indexes or cross-references of any
kind), then a simple change of displayed page numbering is fine.
But, if a "real" (that is, internal) change is needed for indexing
and referencing, righ-clicking on a page number field should bring up
an option to change the number displayed or the internal number
(something like date fields). The program can handle issues of page
breaks and so on.

Fail-safe, option to "remove" page changes, would also help. Making
OOo as easy and easier for the average user than the competition is
supposedly a goal of OOo and SO. Page change complaints are frequent
and demonstrate enormous frustration with the present method -- even
with experienced people. Take a look at the user's list and see how
often it comes up. The present method is COUNTER-intuitive and
should really be changed eventually.

These are good suggestions for a restructured GUI and should be included in
Issue 12138, which essentially is about the same thing. I therefore will close
this as a duplicate and quote parts of the comments here in Issue 12138. Also,
please transfer your vote. Thanks!
