Description jefftong 2003-06-01 16:11:41 UTC
I have just installed 1.1 beta2 (traditional Chinese version) contributed by
Star Division on Chinese Win me. At the whole installation process, Chinese
Characters are replaced by square boxes. I could complete the installation only
because I am familiar with the process. After installation, Chinese characters
of the user interface could not be showned either.

Then, I choose "use system font for user interface" from "Tools->
Options->Accessibility". The problem was solved instantly. The user interface
showed Chinese characters properly! I was able to find the option only because I
am familiar with the position. After all, this problems appears on Windows me/9x
only.

I know that these i10n packages were not officical ones. However, I believe
there will be the same problem on upcoming official packages if the option for
"use system font for user interface" do not turn on.

May I suggest "use system font for user interface" be the default option in OOo
of Windows version in order to attract more potential users?

FT->OS: Are there any issues against such setting? Like UI font
problems under Solaris?
Comment 9 christof.pintaske 2003-10-16 15:30:54 UTC
assigning the bug to me will not make OS to answer your question (nice
try).

I recommend to use the system font on Windows (StarOffice and
OpenOffice.org) and keep the supplied fonts on Unix.

I suggest to move the according checkbox from toolsoptionsopenoffice
Accessibility to View and to provide a Font selection box to choose
the font if "system font" is not checked. To force Joe User to use the
font replacement dialog to chose a UI font is clearly against human
rights. I'm not sure if CJ is already working on that.

I furtheron suggest that you login to CDE on Sunray to examine the
beauty of Solaris UI fonts in the different locales ;-)

Ooops...
New try ;o)
FT->OS: Are there any issues against such setting? Like UI font
problems under Solaris?

Comment 11 Oliver Specht 2003-11-25 07:53:35 UTC
os->ft: As cp already noted the use of system fonts is not really an
option on non-Windows systems.

The reported problem while setup was running is another one which will
be solved by the use of native installers.

And again cp is right in suggesting the move of the UI font checkbox
away from the Accessibility dialog page.

First a comment regarding a11y and JDS:
1. Accessibility requirement definition to use system fonts:
Source: http://www.section508.gov/index.cfm?FuseAction=Content&ID=12#Software
[...]
f) Textual information shall be provided through operating system functions for
displaying text. The minimum information that shall be made available is text
content, text input caret location, and text attributes.

(g) Applications shall not override user selected contrast and color selections
and other individual display attributes.
[...]
This a "shall" requirements but I also found this one as a must have requirement
in an official check list for government buying agents.

2. Fine if there is not issue regarding JDS and system fonts for different
languages.

I propose the following regarding the issue itself:

A. Always use system fonts on Windows systems
B. Use system fonts only for Gnome or KDE window manager on Unix systems only

Any comments?
