At the moment you can only select from a predefined set of gradient fill
patterns and colours. 

Could this please be improved by allowing the user to define the colours that
are being used in the gradient patterns. Perhaps a list of different gradient
fill patterns for the user to select from then pick the colours that the user
would like.

This already exists. Insert a rectangle, mark it and open the area
dialog (format/area). On the fifth tabpage (gradients) you have lots
of possibilites to vary the given examples. When you have designed new
colors on the color tabpage these are available for the gradients, too.
