From menu ... EDIT, FILL shows greyed out options

Select a range and take a look again.

Thanks but I did do that. In fact I can select any cell with any type of
content and edit fill shows greyed out options. Screendump attached

On your screen dump, no cell is selected. Just the cellcursor is
placed on one of it. You have to select at least two adjacent cells to
get the functionality you want. Just press the shift key and hold it
down, now press cursor up, down, left or right and select the cells
you want.
