Apache OpenOffice (AOO) Bugzilla – Issue 15562
Bibliography's change is not updated without inserting reference into text
Last modified: 2013-01-23 01:28:35 UTC
When user change the data in biographical entry (Writer/Insert/Indexes and Tables/Bibliography Entry/ (From document Content *), Edit..and after that does not insert the reference into the text, the changed field (s) remains unaffected (the change is nullificated).
It is not quite clear which data is unaffected, do you mean the citation [wilson2003] or the bibliographic table. If you want to change the citation text e.g. [wilson2003:2] you need use(Writer/Insert/Indexes and Tables/Bibliography Entry/ (From document Content *), Modify. (not edit) If you want the bibliographic table to show the changes to the data you need to update the fields with (writer/Tools/Update/Update all). If this does solve your problem could you explain some more. regards david wilson
Sorry for confusion. 1) I found Edit/Bibliography entry only when the entry is selected or cursor stands in front. The 'Modify' button is not ever to be found under Insert/Indexes and Tables/Bibliography Entry/ ! (the context menu shows Biblio-entry as well) 2) However, my issue is that even I edit the bibliography table entry, and then click OK and 'Close' on the dialogue, the table itself is not affected unless immediate 'Insert' is selected. ... This is taken from the help : Insert Click here to insert the reference into the text. If you redefined a record using the New button, you must also insert it as an entry. If you don't, the record gets lost when closing the document. ....
I understand your problem now. It is not realy a bug but a design flaw, as the software works as the help file says. What is happening is the the Nibliographic field data is actually stored with the citation marker and if the marker is not updated with the insert any changes are lost. I will propose an enhancement request to add a message that teels the user we he has finished makinf\g changes to the the bibliographic fiels that he must select update/insert of lose the changes.
To repeat my above comment without the errors. I understand your problem now. It is not really a bug but a design flaw, as the software works as the help file says. What is happening is the the Bibliographic field data is actually stored with the citation marker and if the marker is not updated with the insert any changes are lost. I will propose an enhancement request to add a message that tells the user we he has finished making changes to the the bibliographic fields that he must select update/insert of lose the changes To restate the problem - If the user makes changes to the in-document bibliographic data . Eg by double-clicking on the bibliographic reference - The 'Edit Bibliographic Entry' panel comes up, user selects Edit and changes some fields in the 'Define Bibliographic Entry' panel. Then selects OK to return to 'Edit Bibliographic Entry' and then selects Close. The user has lost the changes. To save the changes the user must have selected Insert before selecting Close. This is not intuitive. Suggested solutions. The Close button be renamed Cancel which would better reflect that the user has canceled the changes. Or A popup window if the user has made bibliographic entry changes and press Close before insert with a message - 'Closing will discard the edit changes, Select OK to Insert the changes, or Cancel to discard them.'
