Apache OpenOffice (AOO) Bugzilla – Issue 15823
Installation program doesnt configure non root accounts correctly
Last modified: 2003-09-08 16:53:51 UTC
I install OpenOffice 1.1beta 2 on my machine with Suse 8.2 and kde 3.1.1 I installed it in /opt/OpenOffice.org1.1 It gets installed and configured correctly for root user, however I dont seem to find any way to correctly configure it for other users. If i launch setup (after installing) as a normal user setup just thinks i want to reinstall on the existing directory (to which user has no write rights). If i just launch open office program starts but since all its configuration directories are set to the /opt/OpenOffice... directory it has problems when trying to save something, for example if I save the document i get an error messege about not being able to save backup file, This gets fixed if i manually change configuration directories to directories in which user has correct permissions, or if I set the installation directory with write permission to all users (but thats not the idea i guess) I Also find this beta installation terribly slow with very frequent freezings or aparent freezings (not really frozen but taking like 5 minutes to load or repaint) . Examples are two to five seconds to change cell focus on a new spreadsheet, or near 10 seconds in drawing on screen a sentence i type on the keyboard. Even though Oppen Office has always been rather slow in this machine, specially loading the program. This seems a new issue , maybe an installation one? . The Oppen office that comes with Suse8.2 even though slow did not have this frequent freezing and terribly slow loading times. I didnt have this problem either when i tried Beta 1 on same machine with suse 8.0 and kde 3.1 (but i did have the non root users configuration problem when installing beta1 to )
This are two points in one issue. Please write an issue for each problem. 1.) You can't make a standard installation for every local user when you do this as root. You have to make a network installation first, every local user has to make a workstation installation to get the local configuration for OOo. 2.) Maybe Suse 8.2 is the cause? I can't tell you anything about performance, but I think it's important to use the same hard- and software configuration to get evaluable results.

Invalid.
Ok, Installation issue gets solved with a setup -net and then workstation install, however I suggest some changes, since most users will just skip reading a very long installation manual and proceed to launch setup (wich defaults to a non net installation) I suggest that when launching on a linux machine the setup program will always do a net install, at the end of the installation a dialog asks if you wish to setup for current user, with yes as default button, and proceed to install for root (or whoever installed it) also skipping the readme and licence that have allready been shown. Then for other users the setup program will directly do a workstation installation, and if a user starts an openoffice application before doing a workstation installation then oppenoffice calls the workstation setup instead of opening open office. O, by the way when i installed in the correct way the super slow problems dissapeared.
For OOo 2.0 we will change the default to -net installation.
