Description Joe Smith 2003-06-19 20:52:17 UTC
Ok, I've trashed all my old {Star,Open}Office installs and configs (I hope).

Whenever I try to run the 'Report AutoPilot', it says the Java install is
'defective', although the jvmsetup tool recognizes my installed JRE (Sun 1.4.2
beta).

Here is the error message printed by Office (both Star 6.1 beta and OOo 1.1b2)
on the terminal:

$ /opt/OpenOffice.org1.1Beta2/program/soffice -calc
[... open data sources and activate the Report AutoPilot ...]
Error occurred during initialization of VM
Unable to load native library: libjvm.so: cannot open shared object file: No
such file or directory
JavaVM: JNI_CreateJavaVM called _exit, caught by abort_handler in javavm.cxx
/home/jes/OpenOffice.org1.1/user/temp/java/a:/home/jes/OpenOffice.org1.1/user/temp/java/b:/home/jes/OpenOffice.org1.1/user/temp/java/c

The file 'libjvm.so' does exist, as specified in my javarc:

$ grep '^Run' ./OpenOffice.org1.1/user/config/javarc
RuntimeLib=file:///usr/java/j2re1.4.2/lib/i386/client/libjvm.so
[jes@pcsb620 jes]$ file /usr/java/j2re1.4.2/lib/i386/client/libjvm.so
/usr/java/j2re1.4.2/lib/i386/client/libjvm.so: ELF 32-bit LSB shared object,
Intel 80386, version 1 (SYSV), not stripped

And, Java does work:

$ /usr/java/j2re1.4.2/bin/java -version
java version "1.4.2-beta"
Java(TM) 2 Runtime Environment, Standard Edition (build 1.4.2-beta-b19)
Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM (build 1.4.2-beta-b19, mixed mode)

Any ideas?

I forgot to say, this is on RH9.

I tried the Blackdown 1.4.1-01/gcc-3.2 build: it doesn't even run ;(
much less work with OOo. Seems to die in libc_free, so I suppose it's
a glibc mismatch of some kind. At least jvmsetup neither detects it
nor lets me choose it directly.

I see from the dozens of similar bug reports and discussions on the
mailing lists that this topic is done to death. Sorry if I'm only
adding to the noise.

Any idea why jvmsetup accepts Sun's 1.4.2-beta, but OOo calls it
'defective'?

Joe, without reading your description in detail for the moment: Did
you read http://dba.openoffice.org/FAQ/FAQ.html#javaredhat?

Fixed/works in 1.1RC1

jvmsetup detected both java environments I have installed:
jre 1.4.2-beta-b19 (from Sun)
j2sdk 1.4.1_02-b06

I could select either one in jvmsetup and the report autopilot worked.

This issue can be closed as far as I am concerned.

Thanks!
