Apache OpenOffice (AOO) Bugzilla – Issue 15931
Word completion substitutes 'Jandi' with 'Sandi' unexpectedly
Last modified: 2003-09-08 16:56:16 UTC
Hi, I am not certain if this is a bug or a feature, but it certainly is unexpected behaviour. A user on the users list reported the word 'Jandi' was being replaced with 'Sandi' when they pressed space after 'Jandi' (please note, no quotes entered, these are just used here to highlight the word). So I decided to test what was happening. Under WinXP Home/OO1.1Beta2/Australian dictionary - (Sandi is in dictionary, Jandi is not in the dictionary)/Word Completion on/Word Completion on Enter. Notice there are two things that will be shown in this issue. The substituation occurs with a space even though the Word Completion is set up as on Enter. It also only starts once the spell check has been performed. It is not an issue until this occurs. To reproduce this problem perform the following: Close OO1.1Beta2 completely including Quickstarter Open a New Writer document Type in the words 'This is Sandi and Jandi and Sandi and Jandi'. NOTE: Nothing at this stage is happening unusual. Right click on 'Jandi' and select 'Sandi' as the correct word. (It should be the only available option or otherwise you most likely won't be able to test this issue). Now continue to type at the end of the sentence 'Sandi and Jandi and Sandi and Jandi'. The 'Jandi' is replaced each time with 'Sandi' as soon as the space is entered. To reproduce this situation again, do not save anything and shut everything down and start again. During this test once the spell check has been performed 'Sandi' now appeared in the Word Completion list. Deleting 'Sandi' from the Word Completion list does not affect the situation. Word Completion is set the 'Enter' so a space I would have thought should not be causing the autoreplacement. Perhaps I am missing something because I cannot see how or why the word 'Jandi' should be replaced at all by 'Sandi'. It is not in my 'Australian' or 'US' autocomplete word lists ('US' is only mentioned as by default, if no entry in the Australian list exists, the US list is used which is a reported issue). So in conclusion I really cannot see any reason for the word 'Jandi' to be replaced automatically by 'Sandi' due to Word Completion. I further can't see any reason for the substitution to be done on the space being entered when Word Completion is set to work with Enter being pressed. The original users' issue occured under OO1.0.3 but I could only get it to occur once and not reproduce it enough to report. A second person has confirmed this behaviour under WinMe. Hopefully I've made this clear. Thanks Kelvin
Hi, After further testing this is simply a design feature of OpenOffice.org. IMHO it is totally confusing behaviour for the user and one which is not easily turned off in the middle of working in a document. Just my opinion. Marked as worksforme as the program is working as designed. Kelvin
