Description Unknown 2003-07-02 22:20:33 UTC
Equations in an MS-Word document imporeted into OOo 1.1beta2 cannot be edited.
Double-clicking on them results in an error:
"Error activating object: General OLE error".
I have tried this pretty long documents (you can find one in the provided URL
(change the filename for index.html to see an HTML representation of the same
file).
Comment 1 Unknown 2003-07-02 23:34:49 UTC
Just testes the document with the option of Loading and Converting
MathType objects (Options>Load/Save>Microsoft Office>MathType to OO
set to [L]), then OOo 1.1beta2 crashes using the document detailed in
the URL.
Comment 2 maxkennedy 2003-07-03 07:11:04 UTC
Setting the tools > Options >Load/Save > Microsoft Office >
MathType to OO set to [L]), and then trying to load this document
caused a nasty crash on XP, with two error messages, one from Writer,
and one from Windows. The error msgbox from Windows read 'The
exception unknown software exception (0xe06d7363) occured in the
application at location 0x77e73887.'

I had to go in and unmark it before loading the document.

This appears to be a duplicate of issue 16175 with the same error
message.

No, this is of course NOT a duplicate of issue #16175. Here, we have a
OLE-Error message when trying to activate the object, and not a
program crash.
Comment 5 michael.ruess 2003-07-07 09:44:13 UTC
On Linux, it is of course NOT possible to activate MS Equation objects
without converting them.
the mentioned crash will be fixed in next release (OO 1.1 RC)
Comment 6 maxkennedy 2003-07-10 07:00:06 UTC
The attached document does cause a nasty program crash on XP. The
two error messages appears, and Writer completely disappears from
screen and in task manager.

Read my description again. On XP, the attached document causes a
crash. The error messages are the same as issue 16175.

If it isn't the same as issue 16175, ie we are dealing with three
different problems, I'll open up a new issue for the crash.

Comment 7 michael.ruess 2003-07-10 08:33:53 UTC
Partly right...
The crash which occurs with this document is handled in issue #16175,
which will be fixed in OO 1.1 RC (I tested it with an internal
pre-release build).

This issue here is originally about the "General OLE-Error" which
occurs, when you try to activate an object, of which the Server
application is not installed on the system (e.g. on a Linux system,
there you will never have an MS Equation). This Error message is a
LEGAL message and does Of COURSE NOT describe a program crash.
Thus, this issue will be closed as "WONT FIX" or "WORKSFORME", because
it is never good to have "mutating" issues, where the original
description turns into a different description. It is VERY difficult
to handle this (I now it from my job as Software QA).

Equation objects from MS Word can be editited in OO on Linux. They
have to be converted to OO Math objects. This happens, when switching
on the conversion in "Tools.Options.Load/Save.Microsoft Office".
In OO 1.1 Beta 2 it will crash, when you try to activate an OLE object
(see issue #16175), but OO 1.1 Beta1 will not and also the soon
released OO 1.1 RC.
