Apache OpenOffice (AOO) Bugzilla – Issue 16597
Cut and paste between browser
Last modified: 2017-05-20 10:11:29 UTC
Try cut and paste some text and graphics from IE to MS Word, and you can see the paragraph appear properly postition again in the Word file, without any unnessesary extra tables created (As in Oo). This ease my editing later, without the need to reposition table or delelte table rows/ columns. Hope you guy can look into this, as cut & paste is my routine. Hope can see improvement in the official Oo 1.1
SBA: Reassigned to Bettina from the User Experience team for consideration.

I was able to replicate this issue with Open Office Writer v.3.3.0 (OOO330m20 Build:9567) while comparing to Microsoft Office Profession Plus/ Microsoft Word 2010 v.14.0.6123.5001. I am testing on a Windows XP professional O/S v5.1. My steps to replicate the issue were as follows: 1.Open a blank MS Word document. Copy and paste an image with text from I.E. 6. Choose “Keep Source Formatting” as the paste option. 2.Open a blank OO Writer document. Paste the same image with text as step 1 (the copied data is still in the clipboard). 3.Compare the two documents. Expected Result: The pasted image and text in the OO Writer document looks very similar to the pasted image in MS Word. Actual Result: The pasted image and text in the OO Writer document had multiple extra boxes/frames around the pasted image and text. See attached file: TestResultsBug16597. I also tested with various combinations of CTRL+C/CTRL+V vs. Right Click Copy/Right Click Paste in both Internet Explorer 6 and Internet Explorer 8. It appears, based upon the results, that the IE Browser version and the method of Copy/Paste does not change the results. However, copying and pasting an image only did match the results I see in MS Word. See attached file: AdditionalTestsBug16597 for additional tests and results. This functionality is important to users who regularly use a word processor to document instructions on or references to web applications. The additional frames/boxes which show up when pasting in OO Writer causes extra formatting work for the user and they may be driven to use a different Word Processor which does not cause them this additional work.

I wasn't able to reproduce the bug with doing cut and paste like the summary mentioned but I was able to see the same results when copying and pasting from IE8 to MicroSoft Word 2010 and OO Writer 3.3. The steps I took to recreate the bug were: 1) Open a blank MicroSoft Word document and copy from IE8 and pasted into MicroSoft Word with the option of keeping the format. 2) Open Open Office 3.3 and pasted the same text/image into Open Office. 3) Compared MicroSoft Word to Open Office. I was expecting to see the image to look the same but I saw many discrepancies. MicroSoft Word copied the image the way I expected. I was able to see the image and the text very clear. In Open Office, the image didn't display and the text was a lot smaller than what I saw in MicroSoft Word. Some other tests that I tried and there results were: 1) CTRL C & CTRL V - I had the same results as above. 2) Snagit - This time it pasted both the text and the image in but in Open Office the lines were still underneath. 3) Text only and Image only worked fine. The image and the text were there. The copy and paste functionality is important to customers who have to put presentations or documents together. The customer wants something that is easy to use and doesn't require re-work. With the way the copy and paste functionality is right now, they will have to do a lot of re-work and might choose another product to do their work.
