Apache OpenOffice (AOO) Bugzilla – Issue 16632
Template Preview Needed
Last modified: 2013-02-07 22:38:11 UTC
I sent a large number of templates I had written to a friend and he came back with a complaint -- he had to open every template to find which one he wanted to use (about seven Letterhead templates). I notice that when one opens File > New > Templates and Documents, File > Template > Organize/Edit that clicking on a template name brings up a small subset of the descriptions and no thumbnail of the template. It would make it easier for a user to select a template if the Organizer and Edit lists had thumbnails so the user could see a brief image of what s/he is about to use.

not an API issue, UI sounds more appropriate
At least the File/New/Templates and Documents dialog has a preview button to switch from the description to the preview of the template. But it's maybe a good idea to either provide the same in the two other dialogs or to merge the functionality of those dialogs. Reassigned to BH.
Perhaps this could also be extended to all File|Open operations so that any OOo document can be previewed.

The only thing I would add is that the "drawing" of the templates seems to take a very long time, but I'd rather live with that than jumping all over the place to see if I do, indeed, have the correct file.
Any idea when this might be implemented or at least looked at carefully?
File > New > Templates and Documents presents the option for a preview (in 1.1.1rc). However, File > Templates > Organize and File > Templates > Edit do not. It would be helpful if they did.

In 2.4, File|Templates|Organise does not have any preview option. Perhaps someone else can comment on ver 3 beta.
To grep the issues easier via "requirements" I put the issues currently lying on my owner to the owner "requirements".
Preview in the dialog would be very helpful for usage of templates. CCed UX for this issues
