Apache OpenOffice (AOO) Bugzilla – Issue 16940
Spellcheck does not work on documents created from a template that has then had text pasted into it from MS WORD
Last modified: 2017-02-11 03:12:09 UTC
Hello. This bug is going to be a hard one to replicate, and will not effect many people, but it has unconvinced me many times. (until I stopped creating my documents from a template) I will give a brief explaination on how I found this bug. When I first got Openoffice, I wanted MSWORD margins , so I saved a blank document in MSWORD and then opened it in OPENOFFICE and saved it as a template. I then copied and pasted one of the stories I was working on from MSWORD into a document based on that template, and then saved it as a OPENOFFICE file. Spellcheck did not work on the documents I was creating at that time. I thought there was a problem with Openoffice and inserting text from word documents. I spent months thinking that this was the reason, but after doing some tests today I have discovered what I think was happening. Spellcheck does not work on documents created from a template that has then had text pasted from MS WORD. I have three files to attach - The template File, a sample word file, and a sample OPENOFFICE document created with the other two documents showing that the spellcheck is not working. I know that there are a lot more important bugs to work on, but I thought I should bring it to your attention. Regards Adam Wieland anw@anthea-m.com
Created attachment 7734 [details] Sample Files - Template. Word Doc and Openoffice doc with spellcheck not working.
I meant to say, " it has inconvenienced me many times"
I have spent more time looking at the problem, and it is not due to template (although the problem does occur as described). It seems I encounter the bug whenever I start a document in WORD 2000, convert it into OPENOFFICE.org and then paste text from WORD into the new document. Each time I try that I get the same result - the spellcheck stops working. I think it stops working on other occasions as well, but I can't think of them at the moment. I thought it was due to the template, but I have tried it with a clean template made in OPENOFFICE.org and the spell check worked on the text that I pasted from WORD I'm sorry for not being able to explain exactly what the problem is. When you say that spell check isn't working, that does that entail? Are you getting an error message? Or is it simply telling you the document has been checked when misspellings are obvious? Thanks, Tam
it is simply telling me that the document has been checked when misspellings are obvious. The Autocheck doesn't work either.
Hi, Adam: Can you give me some additional information? Which dictionaries do you have installed and enabled? Thanks, Tam
Hi Tam, I'm not sure where to check. But I haven't changed whatever the default was. Seems to be American spelling. If you open the attachment there is an openoffice file which the spellcheck doesn't work on. I can replicate the problem (on my computer at least) each time by starting a file in word 2000, converting it to Openoffice format, and then pasting a page or two of text from word 2000 into it. The spell check stops working from then on in that document. I hope this helps. regards Adam.
Morning Adam! I am no expert on the dictionaries or their functions, but I think we might be able to get this figured out. The document you attached to your bug report requires the English (Australian) dictionary. When I try to spell check it, I get a dialog box that tells me that this dictionary is required. After I close that advisory, it tells me spell checking is complete and do I want to start from the beginning of the document, which, of course, still includes spelling errors. If you highlight a paragraph of the text in The Doll document and select: Format > Character > Font tab > Language, it shows "English (Australia)". If you do not have a check mark next to this language, you don't have the proper dictionary installed for this document. If I change this language selection to "English (USA)", which is one of the dictionaries I have enabled, and then spellcheck the document, the changed paragraph spellchecks properly, but the rest of the document does not. To check to see which dictionaries you have installed go to: Tools > Options > Language Settings > Writing Aids and choose "Edit". and click on the "Language" list box. I think this information might help to solve your problem, but I don't understand why, when you commenced spellcheck on the document, it didn't tell you you did not have the required dictionary installed. Please let me know if this helps. Thanks, Tam
Hi Tam. THANK YOU , THANK YOU, THANK YOU. I downloaded the Australian Dictionary, installed in manually, and now all my documents are being spellechecked correctly. All except one which I have just highlighted and found that it is in English UK so after I install that dictionary everything should work. I don't know how it changed to Australian or English format because I haven't changed anything in the Openoffice.org program. Maybe the text I pasted from Word 2000 was using a Word dictionary of that type. I am still using Beta 1.1 so maybe that's why it didn't tell me. Anyway, thank you again for your help. PS: Should I close this bug report? Also, as the dictionary files don't seem to be big, Openoffice.org should include them all in the install so the user can choose which ones he or she wants. It would be much easier then downloading them one at a time. I know I've said it a few times now but Thank You... Regards Adam.
Hi, Adam! I'm really glad we were able to take care of this without too much "muss and fuss". :) I'm closing the issue as WORKSFORME, since it wasn't really a bug. As far as inclusion of dictionaries, there seems to be some discussion of that which includes, but is not limited to, approval from Sun's legal department in some cases. I don't know the current status of all these RFE's, but you can check them out and see if any of them fit your situation. You might want to upgrade to 1.1rc2, or you can wait for the next release, which I understand is to be available shortly. Thanks for using OpenOffice.org! Tam

Wow! Old complaints and never fixed. Open Office Writer version 4.1.3 will not spell check if text is copied & pasted from Microsoft Wordpad. The only way to get the spell checker to resume working is to close and open a fresh copy. Pathetic.
