Apache OpenOffice (AOO) Bugzilla – Issue 1803
StarOffice should instantly be able to use all installed scalable fonts.
Last modified: 2003-05-20 16:30:57 UTC
On the Linux platform with the XFree86 X server, OpenOffice, unlike all QT and GTK applications, does not seem to be able to recognize recently installed fonts. Instead advanced users must trawl through the `StarOffice Truetype Font HOWTO' and perform various operation on their fonts to make them available to OpenOffice. New users generally wouldn't be able to follow this guide as its fairly technical in nature. OpenOffice should perform whatever work is necessary to use all installed scalable fonts within its applications upon startup. This would be benefical in the following ways: * Allows new users to use their installed fonts in StarOffice * Allows advanced users to use their installed fonts in StarOffice without having to perform a great deal of work in setting up and maintaining their font collection * Allows consistency between OpenOffice and all other applications installed on a system Thanks guys!

Generally this issue describes exactly what OpenOffice does. All installed scalable fonts (Type 1 and TrueType) are detected by OO and can be used. The restriction is RedHat and their derivatieves. They have no FontPath set in XF86Config and instead a fontserver defined. This is currently not taken into account from OO. If you are a user of RedHat or one of it's derivatieves you can workaround the problem by linking your scalable fonts into <openoffice_root_dir>/share/fonts/truetype/ to make them usable in OO. But generally scalable fonts should work in OO right out of the box. If you have a special problem with one specific font (and you have not the above described 'RedHat-problem') please let me know. Otherwise I consider this one as a 'Reminder' to solve the problem with the fontserver on RedHat and others.

This has been resolved for ages. Works at least in OOo1.0.1.
