Apache OpenOffice (AOO) Bugzilla – Issue 1875
Problem with OpenOffice and StarOffice Installation on Wn2k SP2
Last modified: 2003-09-08 16:53:51 UTC
Well, unfortunately, I can't get much more specific than this, guys: I installed StarOffice 6.0 Beta and got a crash upon executing any of the applets. At this time I was still using JRE 1.3.0. I uninstalled it, and installed OpenOffice.org 638, where the installer crashed in the last phase of install. The applets also crash. "Crash" refers to just a generic crash, "Foo.exe has generated errors and will be closed". I'm on Win2k SP2, with many, many different programs installed. I COULD return a list, but it would be rather lengnthy, and probably not very helpful. Also, I can't uninstall because the setup.inf is not generated correctly. I did upgrade to JRE 1.4 beta, but that didn't help. It looks like youguys are all doing great work, so please keep it up, and end me an e-mail if you have any further questions! Zach Lowry
Hi Zach, I'm a little confused by your description. You've written that you have installed StarOffice 6.0 Beta (or OOo638), and and "any of the applets" crashed. What applets you are talking about? Neither StarOffice nor OOo needs Java to run, so it will not make a difference which JRE you use. You write: "Foo.exe has generated errors and will be closed". What is 'Foo'? You have definitlay a damaged installation, otherwise it must be possible to uninstall. Please try to download the latest OOo version (638C) and install again.
I'm also running win2k with SP2 and JDK 1.3.1. Both OpenOffice 638c and StarOffice Beta install for me, but when I try run any of the apps from either Suite, I get the slash screen and then the machine freezes (the mouse pointer freezes, and ctrl-alt-del doesn't do a thing, its power button time). The machine is a Althon Thunder 1 Ghz box with a Promise PCI controller. I suspect that hardware combo may be part of the problem. I know my Dell Inspiron 8100 with a very similair software setup runs OpenOffice 638 without a hitch.
Nope, I'm on a Tyan Tiger 133, dual P3's, Adaptec Ultra160 SCSI, and 2gb Ram. Our setup's are not too similar, but still, you're probably on to something. Zach Lowry
Can you tell which graphuic device is running on you systems? If it is Matrox G4xx reduce the hardware acceleration.
ATI Radeon 64mb DDR VIVO... Any issues with it?
My card was in fact Matrox G400. I turned down the hardware acceleration and now it seems to work fine. Can you tell me the nature the problem?
Hi Zach, hi John, we know about problems with the drivers of these graphic devices. As far as I know the latest driver from Matrox should solve the problem (for John). With the ati device: try to play a little with the graghik settings: reduce the collor (to 256 or 16 bit), change the resolution, reduce the wardware acceleration step by step or try to reset your computer to standard VGA settins and try to start setup again.
Sorry for commiting without reading ;-) I woudn't bother you with my typos.
I am also encountering this problem. The setup program crashes at the very end of the install process. When I try to run the Writer component, I get the following error. "soffice.exe has generated errors and will be closed by Windows. You will need to restart the program. An error log is being created." I did it the same way as Zach; I installed StarOffice 6.0 Beta which failed. I then tried to install OpenOffice 638C. Both failed in the same way. I am running on an IBM ThinkPad T20 with 384 MB RAM. These systems use the "S3 Inc. Savage/IX Display Driver", for whatever that's worth. Before attempting this, I did use StarOffice 5.2 for a little while a couple of months back.
Just a quick note to add here. I'm experiencing the same problem with the install. It gets to about 99% done and then crashes with the same odd error. The only way to uninstall was to delete the directory structure and start over. I'm sitting at work so I don't remember the exact components in my machine at home where I have this problem. I'll try setting the video accel down and see if that fixes the problem.
I've an additional question: Are you trying to install on a fat32 partition? If yes, try to install on ntfs partition. There is an issue on fat32 with a fix in progress.
Hi all Havn't tried StarOffice, but i have a similar problem on my IBM ThinkPad A20P with the 641C binaries for Windows 2000 that has a FAT- 32 disk. The installation procedes to Registering the components which it does for a good while and stops with an application error message from setup.exe "The instruction at "0x038b6d3d" referenced memory at "0x00000000". The memory could not be "read"". Trying to re-run setup gives an error of a missing setup.inf file in the installation target directory, but that is probably just a secondary problem. Installation works fine on a Compaq Armada M700 with NTFS disk... On the IBM ThinPad A20P on the other hand the issue is reproducable, at least with our setup. (OS: Win 2000 Pro, SP 2 + hotfixes, memory 523760 KB and FAT 32 disk) Any news on the fix for FAT 32?
This issue has metamorphosed to nice issue collection. So back to the root: Zach seems to have a problem with his ATI graphik device. We are in contakt with ATI to solve some problems with graphik drivers. The install problem with Win2000 and fat32 is fixed in the current inhouse version and should reach OOo wih the next release. For the others: please try with OOo641c and write a new issue.
It's a problem with ATI drivers, can't be fixed.
