Description Unknown 2003-09-14 11:10:35 UTC
Found this bug with Writer 1.1RC4 (German version) on Win98SE. The file was created in Writer from
scratch, not imported.

Easiest way to replicate bug:
- unzip files
- create a copy of
"bugfile", for example "copy of bugfile"
- start Writer
- click open, select bugfile. it should
open normally.
- click open again, select the copy of bugfile.

At this point, Writer hangs
replicably on my machine, even after a clean reboot. The progress bar finishes normally, then
disappears so the grey background behind it becomes visible. After that, Writer is frozen and
must be shutdown with ctrl-alt-del.

The fact that both files are identical does not seem to be
important. It seems you can open any file, and then open "bugfile" to cause this.

The strange
thing is that Writer does not hang when "bugfile" is opened the first time. Neither does it when you
do the following:

- open Writer
- create a new Writer document (so you're in the second window
now)
- in this second window, open "bugfile"
- click open again, open "copy of bugfile"

This
procedure did never crash so far, although the only difference is creating an empty document
before the procedure described first.

Another thing I found out: For testing, I split the
file into two parts (see zip file). Both can be opened in any combination without problems. Now
follow these steps:

- create a new file in Writer
- select the entire contents of "first half"
and paste it into the new file
- repeat for "second half" (append to the new file)
- save the new
file (e.g. "bugfile reassembled")

The new file shows the same behaviour as "bugfile",
although both parts load normally.

The tables resulted from copy-and-paste operations from
several sources: SPSS 10/11 data and output, Excel, OOo Spreadsheet. Inserting always went
without problems and worked the same way for all programs.

Followed the instructions to replicate the bug and it didn't freeze
for me. Using 1.1rc4 English.

Have you tried reinstalling and see if the problem persists?
Comment 3 pavel 2003-09-14 15:29:42 UTC
I can not reproduce on GNU/Linux with RC4 English nor with our self
build Czech version.
Comment 4 Unknown 2003-09-15 08:28:24 UTC
jmm: Which OS did you try it on?

Will check this today on another Win98 machine I
have access to. If it doesn't replicate there, I'll reinstall it into a new dir and see
if it persists on my machine.

HI rm888,

maybe it's a config problem of your windows??

If there's no new comment from anybody confirming the problem this
Issue has to be closed on 10/06/2003, sorry...

Ok, this is strange...

No problems on the other machine. Same OS (Win98SE), same
OOo install files used, similar configuration.

So I applied the repair option
(of the installer) to my installation. No change.

I uninstalled RC4 completely,
renamed the remaining folder, reinstalled (into a folder with a different name, just
to be sure). The bug still persists.

I checked the registry for any entries still
pointing to the old installation. The only one was wordbook-related, and changing it
had no effect.

I'm out of ideas what to try next. The only related thing that
differs to the other machine is that I still have OO 1.0 and OO 1.0.3.1 installed (in
separate directories). OO 1.0.3.1 can open the file in any combination without
problems.

I also deactivated any programs that might interfere, like my virus
scanner. No change.

Any suggestions welcome.
