Description mitsu 2001-10-25 00:56:06 UTC
It would be very nice if the list of most-recently-used files would be available
from the Quickstarter, instead of having to launch an Office component first,
then select the file from the File menu. (I have a separate issue that I am
going to enter to ask that the MRU file list be user-configurable to more than 4
items).

Reassigned to Falko.
Comment 2 stefan.baltzer 2001-10-29 10:09:05 UTC
And now i really reassign it.

???
We will not implement what already exists:
Start - Documents under Windows
Comment 4 mitsu 2001-11-29 18:56:40 UTC
Start->Documents is NOT equivalent to an MRU under Quickstarter. If
you're only using StarOffice, then yes, it is equivalent, but most
people use MANY other applications besides StarOffice. So what
typically occurs is that the Start->Documents list gets filled up
with other documents, such as graphics files, etc., that one might
have viewed or edited.

The point of an MRU list is that many users (like myself) often have
a number of Office documents that we use regularly, such as a
spreadsheet or word processing file. I often do a lot of work with
other applications, however, so the word processing file or
spreadsheet is long gone from Start->Documents but remains in the
Office MRU. At present, what I usually have to do is open a word
processing window or something, then select the document from the
File MRU.

Please note one important thing: most of you working on StarOffice
are using StarOffice primarily, and you are using it in a development
situation. Those of us out here in the real world are using it in
actual production situations and thus our experiences are quite
different --- however they are also much closer to what normal users
will experience. The reason you think Start->Documents is equivalent
to a StarOffice MRU is that you're not using StarOffice in the real
world, so you forget that many users use other applications besides
StarOffice. This happens very easily: just open ten image files, for
example. So please, consider this feature request, and don't simply
dismiss it because you're working in an artificial development
environment that does not match real world conditions.

90% of the time I want to open an MRU file, but since the
Quickstarter doesn't have the MRU, I almost never can use it. I use
the Quickstarter just to open an app and then use that app to open
another window using the MRU. This is awkward and doesn't fit most
user's experience.

Also note: the quickstarter as it is now is primarily useful for
creating new documents, not opening existing ones.

Reopening for reconsideration.

After giving a second thought I get more attached to the idea.
Especially because it would ease the live of KDE/Gnome users (as I
became in the meantime ;o).
Comment 6 bettina.haberer 2003-11-27 13:53:18 UTC
Considered for 'Office later' as the Quickstarter is no feature area
for OO.o 2.0.

For OOo 2 the Quickstarter is switched off by default. For Windows guideline
conformance it also has less menu commands than before.
