Apache OpenOffice (AOO) Bugzilla – Issue 20981
OpenOffice does not run
Last modified: 2012-05-27 01:02:01 UTC
OpenOffice does not run after I install it on my computer.
This report is too general to be useful in determining the users problem. The summary is very generic and vague. We cannot determine why it is not running, or when it does not run. The report provides some more details, because it "seems" to indicate that OpenOffice installs but does not run after installation. Without more information, we cannot determine the source of the users problem. The quick solution is to request from the user a step by step list of instructions on how they installed OpenOffice on their machine. We also need more information on: 1. Did the user meet the minimum system requirements for OpenOffice? 2. Did they use prepackaged binaries ( RPMs, Debian pkgs, etc ) to install OpenOffice? If they are using prepackaged binaries from a vendor, they should first check the vendor's support database to see if there is any known problems. The user should also follow the vendor's instructions for installing OpenOffice, not the instructions listed on the OpenOffice.org web site. Ideally, we should only support installation problems when users use the downloads provided on the OpenOffice.org web site. 3. Are they using the binaries from OpenOffice.org? Did their downloads pass a MD5SUM check? We want to make sure they do not have corrupted installation binaries. 4. The type of install they performed. Did they install OpenOffice according to the instructions on the OpenOffice.org website or did they use their own procedure? What userid did they try the installation with? Remember, on Unix systems, OpenOffice is typically installed in 2 phases. The first stage requires the root user to install OpenOffice using the -net configuration so that OpenOffice can be shared amongst many users. The second stage requires the userid who want to use OpenOffice to run a "Local" or "Workstation" install to install some configuration files that are specific to the user. 5. The Linux distribution they are using. 6. Which version of Linux are they using? Some problems could be tied to the version of glibc they are using. 7. How did they try to run OpenOffice? Was it via an icon or did they start it from the command line? 8. Did they get a crash log or error message when trying to run OpenOffice.org. 9. Does the user have Java on their system? If so, which version is it? The user should check the Java versions that are compatible with OpenOffice. 10. If OpenOffice seems to crash X, which version of X and which video drivers are they using? I'm sure there are lots more questions to be asked, but the idea that this training issue is trying to demonstrate is that installation bugs require a lot of background information on the users computer configuration as well as the steps taken by the user to encounter this problem. With practice, you should get a good feel on the source of installation problems. A lot of installation problems arise from improper OpenOffice installations ( please read the manual ).
