Description brendel 2001-11-02 08:16:41 UTC
It's a pity that there is not the possibility to link the address database of OpenOffice to the Addressdatabase of Palm's (at least not an "official"
one and I could not figure out how to do it with "Other external data source").
I guess, just looking at the numbers of Handhelds with the Palm OS sold, that there might quite a lot of people be interested in synchornizing
with the palm address database.

Thanks for considering this

Oliver

MArc -> Falko: RFE, that's for you.
Comment 2 Frank Schönheit 2001-11-02 16:15:48 UTC
Just as comment:
This would mainly require patches to mozilla. OOo uses mozilla
libraries to access the different address book types - mozilla has the
code to bridge the data through a common interface.
So in real, this would need to be an issue in BugZilla - the mozilla
bug tracking system.

This issue is re-assigned to Christian Jansen for further evaluation.

Refered to Franks comment I'm going to close the issue. If mozilla
supports different address book type. We should rethink about this issue.

If we are really going to get people off of Windoze, then we are going
to have to compete with them in customer service as well as in
products. Today, the $500 beast called "Microsft Office" supports
synchronising with various PDAs (E.g. Palm Pilot). It is not only
useful, it is critical for most office-type users who are on the go.

Case in point: my salesman neighbour who I just last year got to
switch to Linux from Windows 95. He knows little about the technology
of his machine although he adjusted very well due to his own personal
patience. He uses KDE Konqueror for his few surfing needs so he has
no direct interaction with Mozilla (He has no idea what "Mozilla" is,
actually, much less "Bugzilla"). He uses Open Office but was dismayed
at the idea that there is a enhancement request which has the status
of "RESOLVED WONTFIX". He thinks that Open Office ought to pursue
this as an important enhancement when resources/time/schedule/etc.
permits. I have to admit that I agree with him.

Today, both of us use Jpilot and copy/paste between Jpilot and Open
Office applications. It works fine but this is not as seamless as it
could be.

Ok, that's our 2 cents (from the programmer and the salesman).

Richard, I see your point - I agree that closing this issue may have
happened too fast.
I saw some movement with respect to Palm access in Mozilla on the 1.2
branch, so there may be possibility ...
(I do not exactly know what they implemented ...)

However, we may have to wait for Mozilla, anyway, and can't influence
their work heavily ....

grabbing this bug - no need to linger in CJ's intray ....
Comment 7 Frank Schönheit 2002-12-19 14:31:58 UTC
target milestone set to OOo Later - need to watch the Mozilla
development for this, or decide to go own ways ...

Maybe in the future when OpenSync (http://www.opensync.org/) matures, it would
be a way to resolve this issue.

Palm OS is out of date since 2009 and PDA devices don't exist anymore.
