I'm basically asking for a marginless display mode.

In addition to the various page display modes available in Writer while editing
text, could you add one that excludes the grey background on either side of the
page and also excludes the left and right margins?  In other words, the very
left edge of the text would be within a few pixels of the left edge of the
window and likewise for the right edge of the text and window.  All the current
methods waste a lot of screen real estate.  The same goes for the top and bottom
margins.  Have this "text only" mode not display the headers and footers, just
the text region and a horizontal line of some sort to indicate the page break.
