Two problems here, running OOo 1.1 under Linux, RH9:

  1. when trying to import a MS Word file (loads OK under Office97), it gets
     about 3/4rs across the 'Importing' bar then crashes completely - need to
     terminate XWindows manually to get free :-(

  2. if file is exported by Office97 in RTF, then loaded into OOo1.1, the
     document loads but has lost all the column formatting

I can Reproduce the problem on 
OpenOffice 1.1 (default Install, US), Win XP Pro Sp1. 
(And MS Office XP Sp2). 
It is real problem

when opened, progress bar around 75%, no progress again
the documents opened in word xp without any problem. 
it contain 2 column text.

Change OS to all, reproduce in win xp

Fixed for OO 2.0. You can check this with current OO 2.0 snapshot 680m15.

Closed. Fixed in current OO 2.0 build.
