Apache OpenOffice (AOO) Bugzilla – Issue 22838
Problem with DNS ans MX field
Last modified: 2004-08-04 20:00:55 UTC
Some users report the impossibility to send email to italian mailing list. It seems because there is a problem with your DNS and the MX field.that appears undefined. In fact a dig command reports: [dozza@refosco contribuire]$ dig it.openoffice.org mx ;; Got SERVFAIL reply from 127.0.0.1, trying next server ; <<>> DiG 9.2.3rc2 <<>> it.openoffice.org mx ;; global options: printcmd ;; Got answer: ;; ->>HEADER<<- opcode: QUERY, status: NOERROR, id: 51317 ;; flags: qr rd ra; QUERY: 1, ANSWER: 0, AUTHORITY: 0, ADDITIONAL: 0 ;; QUESTION SECTION: ;it.openoffice.org. The same was reported by users from Czech mailing lists.

adjust prio.
Filed an internal issue PCN 24570 for the engineer to look at. Thanks, Priya
Engineer updated in the internal issue as follows: "Technically, the MX field is not required; in the abscense of an MX field, the relevant RFC requires that clients use the record which was retrieved as if it were the only MX record. For reference, see the section titled "Interpreting the List of MX RRs" in RFC 974: http://www.faqs.org/rfcs/rfc974.html"
Technically the explanation from the engineer might be correct but in practise the absence of the mx record results in the following problems. Users can't send to the mailing lists. It also means that messages from openoffice.org bounce with an error like "Remote host said: 501 5.1.8 Sender domain blocked (missing DNS MX record)." I tend to raise the prio to P1 as the mail system is seriously affected.
seems to be fixed
24570: resolved fixed on PCN. louis
What was the comment from engineer?
MX fields are not required, but the current behavior of the lists suggested adding them as the solution easiest to obtain, especially given the error messages. That said, they added the MX records; further, Brightmail requires MX records. As an aside, it was noted that many domains do not have explicit MX fields. Sorry, had to sanitize the fun parts. -louis
