when I try to save my presentation file.sxi I get a genral error message.
of general input/output error. How do I correct this to save file

this sounds like a known bug.
Please have a look to issue 19520
I wrote a work around for the i/o error in issue 19520

This issue is duplicate to issue 19520
Issue 19520 is fixed and integrated in OOo 1.1.1
I close this issue.
Please reopen it if the bug still occures in OOo1.1.1.
