Description acli 2003-12-09 17:16:33 UTC
In OOo Issuezilla, some Chinese translations (traditional dialects) are very
strange and cannot be comprehended. It seems that the interface has been
translated with the help with a computer program instead of a person. The
following is an incomplete list of some of the more serious problems:

(Section 1 below, and possible 5.2, would also apply to the simplified dialect.)

1. Completely wrong:

1.1. "FIXED" is translated as "固定的"; this word only means "Fixed" as in
fixing something in a certain position, *not* some problem being solved. The
correct word should be "已修正" ("corrected", Debian's translation).

1.2. "WONTFIX" is translated "固定習慣", which is meaningless (or means
literally "fixed [i.e., fixed, habitual] habit"); a possible translation would
be "不修正" ("won't be corrected", Debian's translation).

1.3. "LATER" is translated "後者" ("latter"). A possible correct translation
would be "押後考慮" ("consideration postponed").

1.4. "WORKSFORME" is translated "工作版" ("work board"?); this is completely
meaningless in the context. A correct translation would be "無法重現錯誤"
("cannot reproduce problem", Debian's translation).

1.5. "Leave as <foo>" is translated as "委托 為 <foo>"; this makes no sense at
all. A possible (but obviously sub-optimal) translation might be "保留在
「<foo>」的狀態".

1.6. "Feature" (in Issue type) is translated as "等徵"; this is meaningless in
the context (the current translation means "feature" as in a geographical
feature, or a physically distinguishing feature, or similar); a correct
translation could be "功能請求" ("feature request").

1.7. On query reports, status is displayed using the first Chinese character;
this produces meaningless output and should not be done. In particular,
"confirmed" (see also 5.2) is displayed as "為" ("be", "do"), which is
completely meaningless in the context.

1.8. "Priority" is translated "優先權", which would imply that priority is some
kind of permission or privilege. A more appropriate translation may be "優先次序
", which would imply that the priority is some kind of sorting order.

1.9. "Resolve issue, marking it as duplicate of issue #" is translated "解決事
件,標記它為事件 # 的副本" ("Resolve issue, marking it as [carbon] copy of issue
#") may be more appropriately translated "解決事件,標記它為與右列事件相同:#"
("Resolve issue, marking it as being same as the issue listed on the right: #").

1.10. "Sort by" is translated "經由......分類" ("categorize via ..."), which is
wrong. A correct translation would be "排序" ("sorting").

2. Quite strange:

2.1. "Reporter" is translated as "通訊員". This term would be understood as
someone like a radio operator or dispatcher or some such, not a bug reporter. A
word like "報告者" would be more appropriate.

3. Grammatical errors:

3.1. "Remove selected CCs" is translated "移除選定的 CCs". Here, "CCs" should be
"CC" (no "s").

4. Wrong dialect:

4.1. "patch" is translated "補丁". This is zh-CN'ism; in zh-TW (all dialects)
this should be "修補" (patch) or "修補檔案" (patch file).

5. Awkward constructions:

5.1. "depends on" is translated "依賴於"; the "於" is superfluous.

5.2. "confirmed" is translated "為確認的"; the "為" is superfluous. A better
translation might be "已確認".

5.3. "Query" is translated "詢問"; while correct, I don't think this is the
idiomatic translation for "query" as in a "database query". A more idiomatic
translation might be "查詢".

5.4. "Oldest first" is translated "最老的最先". This is acceptable, but a
slightly better translation would be "最舊的最先". ("老" usually implies oldness
of age in people, not things.)

Correction: In 1.6, the current (wrong) translation "等徵" should be "特徵"
Comment 2 acli 2003-12-09 17:37:06 UTC
5.5. "Additional comments from" is translated "從......的附加注釋". This is
quite awkward and probably points to an untranslatable source string. A better
translation (a workaround to the possible untranslatable source string) might be
just "附加注釋:" ("Additional comments:").
