Apache OpenOffice (AOO) Bugzilla – Issue 24540
Merely saving file in an external format causes spurious warning
Last modified: 2004-08-06 21:41:53 UTC
Suppose the user opens an sxw document. *Without doing anything else*, the user saves it in some external format (e.g., to convert it into plain text or HTML). If the user, again *without doing anything else*, immediately close the document (note that absolutely no change has been made), OOo prompts "Saving in external formats may have caused information loss. Do you still want to close?" This warning is superfluous and confusing to the user, because it is impossible that information loss could have occurred (because no changes had been made); it should never have been given in this case.
Component changed from Word processor to framework.
This warning isn´t superfluous and must be displayed this time. Data loss can occur ! Just imagine you open sxw document with pictures, special formatted paragrafs, tables,... and save this doc as a simple txt - file. Many data and information will be lost. This can be interpreted as data loss by the user and therefore this warning is wanted and displayed. However a wish for an enhancement or a feature may be written but this issue is not a defect.
This is a very strange argument. This assumes that the user is clueless (don't know what a text document is, probably because OOo incorrectly calls a word processor document "Text"), but at the same time assumes that the user knows what "data loss" is. If the target audience is assumed to have low technical knowledge, the diction of the warning message is way off. To users that understand what "data loss" is, the first thing they will think of is that the document need to be saved. But the document does not need to be saved BECAUSE THE USER HAS NOT MADE ANY CHANGES. Per request, reopening as "enhancement".
TM->BH: Please have a look, thanks !

I would like to request a configuration option to be able to disable both of these warnings. I imagine many people will need to use OO to modify MSOffice documents on a regular basis and will (like myself) quickly find these messages bothersome. This will hopefully satisfy both the need to warn novice users and the ability for experienced users to avoid annoying messages.
