Description norbert2 2004-03-18 20:43:06 UTC
Please have a look at the attached spreadsheet:

There, the right cell is = the left cell. Although the right cell has
standard-format, it is shown in scientific-mode!
Its not possible to have the right cell shown with standard format.

In Excel the right cell automatically is witched to scientific-mode when set
equal to the left cell. And so in Excel the right cell can be set back to
standard, what really displays the content standard.

Please fix this.

Hi Norbert,

the prio was to high, I corrected this. Also this is not a bug but an Feature of
Calc. Default in this case is the format fitting best to the result of the
calculation. If you use scientific notification for the source cell normally the
best format to fit the result is scientific. So my opinion is to close this as
wontfix.

Falko, please give us your comment and decide how to proceed.

As I remember, Excel changes the format of the cell where the formula has been
entered. And this can be changed (back) by the user, if it is wanted.

This is, in my oppinion, much smarter than the way it is currently handeled by Calc.

Please adopt this behaviour for Calc!

I think you really can close this issue. Now I think the fact that Calc
keeps "Standard" is better than Excel does. ;-) Sorry.

(Now I saw that the behaviour of Excel has the problem that changing the format
of the source cell need to change the formula cell's format, too. So Calcs
behaviour is better.)

So do NOT change this and please forget this issue.

I close this issue.
