Description aparan 2004-03-20 08:11:42 UTC
I opened the same document first in Word 2k and simultaneously / later in OO.o
Writer.

Writer straightaway went to NO EDIT mode. Then only when I tried to "edit file"
[clicked the icon] it came up with error message "Denied access rights, Do you
want to create a copy of the document and so.."

This error message / information should be given as soon as the user tries to
open an already open file.

This is the case when I switched places and MS Word worked as I said earlier.

Please see.

-changed version to 680m32

-Now the title adds a line (read only) to it, good.

-But now error / info. message as soon as the file is opened. Error is
displayed only after the 'edit file' is clicked.

Needs a change in this manner.

Hello Matthias, do you agree with a change here? Isn't the read-only mode is
clear enough? What do you think?

Cahnging version to 680m34.
Under WinXP.

Almost the same thing as Aparan has said.

No error at open.
Error message of "access denied" when click in the "Edit mode".
It ask if I want to open a copy of the document.

Open fine, and if I close without edit it, the OOO don't prompt me to save.

Why it still unconfirmed?
I thought that it make the other members loose their time when trying to confirm
the bus, it isn't?

Bh,
I don't think be a good thing that all the users get a lot of warnings saying
that the access was denied (I got 6 of the same warnings in a single document
when tried to change to "edit mode"-680m38).

Everyone may see that the file is in Read only mode, but there is a problem.
There are more than one reason to a file be read only, it may be saved so.
The user should know why the file is in read only mode.

Is not needed to be an "error message" (errors are annoying), but the user may
to receive an alert, at least add a 'cause' dialog to the user know why it's in
read only mode.

according to the announcement on releases
(http://www.openoffice.org/servlets/ReadMsg?list=releases&msgNo=7503) this issue
will be re-targeted to OOo Later.

I don't want to be disturbed by "Document is readonly" messages whenever I open
a non-writable/locked file.
Think of opening files from removable media like CD-ROM or Internet-locations.

I vote against changing the behaviour. I think the removed (or reduced)
controls/toolbars, title, etc. is enough visual feedback.
Comment 9 caiot1 2004-06-08 14:23:35 UTC
Shall we send it to discuss or qa?
I think we will have more replies and learn some things about it.

using Version 680m74.

Now things have become more severe and confusing. If you open a document [.doc
file] which is already opened elsewhere, OO.o opens it straightaway and that too
in edit mode not the read-only mode as it used to earlier. I did some eidting
and tried to save the document. First it asked whether I want tokeep the
Winword format or OO.o format and then it gave me a file read error message and
'General I/o error. This is quite confusing for the normal user. Please give
proper notifications and warn the user beforehand. This would be quite helpful
in an office atmosphere and people trying to work on the same document over the
network.

I would say allowing to edit the file in such a situation is severe.
