Description norbert2 2004-03-30 20:27:57 UTC
(This issue is thought to replace issue 26942 where I first have misunderstood
some things. I reformulate issue 26942 here as enhacement suggestion (instead as
bug) AND I just found another similar problem which I describe here. So this
issue is NOT a double of 26942!)

Please read carefully and try reproduce the following steps:

- doubleclick cell A1
- enter "=" (do not confirm)
- click cell B1: now the cursor keys can be used to move the red bordered cell.
This OK and similar to Excels dotted bordered cell.
- click into the formula in A1: Now the cursor keys are used to move the cursor
within the formula. The red border is still shown, although now it has no
function. Excel correctly removes the border in this case. I think you should
adopt this form Excel in order to indicate the user that Calc is in
formula-edit-mode.

Excel only shows the border again after pressing F2 in order to switch back to
reference-input-mode.

Please consider to adopt this behaviour because its more intuitive and userfriendly!

Now to the second problem:

When being in formula-edit-mode (so that the this red border cannot be moved)
and the user clicks any cell, the border still cannot be used, that meens Calc
remains in formula-edit-mode.
Excel switches to reference-input-mode (border can be moved by the cursor keys)
in this case.

I think this should also be adopted for Calc.

"the border still cannot be used" should be "the border still cannot be _moved_"

Hi Bettina,

one for you.

Please forget my suugestion below the sentence:
"Now to the second problem:"

After more thinking, I find the way Calc behaves in this case is better then
Excel's behaviour.
Because often in edit-mode someone wants to enter single cells by clicking
them, but not switch to reference-input-mode each time when clicking a cell.

In order to be "compatible" with the first suggestions in this issue, I suggest
when being in edit-mode, to only show a red-border while clicking a cell (while
the mouse-button is hold down) and then switching this red border off (when
releasing the mouse button).

(This would also be convenient with the gaolseek-behaviour:
When insert a reference into the goalseek-window by clicking a cell, the red
border also is only shown while holding down the mouse-button.)

[I have corrected the summary.]
Comment 4 norbert2 2004-05-16 10:25:42 UTC
Since the second "problem" here has vanished and the remaining problem is a bug,
I correct the "Issue type".

The fact that Calc does not remove the red border although the edit-mode
(cursor-keys are used to navigate through the formula) is selected is a bug.

The user has NO way to see what function the cursor-keys currently have!! He
just has to try if the cursor-keys move the cursor or enter references by moving
the red-border.

That's extremely annoying!

Even the recent Planmaker beta has not this problem!

Hello norbert2, please don't put several problems into one issue. The first
problem is considered: Excel shows two kinds of frame here. The first one is the
dotted bordered frame; at clicking in A1 again, in Excel the frame keeps alive,
but now visible as continous colored line showing a reference cell. In Calc we
could also visualize that.
Comment 6 norbert2 2004-06-04 20:28:26 UTC
Hi Bettina,

thanks for your interest and efforts in this issue.

But I'm not really sure, if we talk about the same problem:

The the red border corresponds to excels black dotted border.
Calc does not hide this border after the user has pressed F2 so that he can use
the cursor keys now to navigate within the formula instead of moving this input
frame.

- Excel hides this frame in this case and I wish that Calc does the same.
- Maybe you should also change the style of the refernce-input-frame from red to
black dotted like Excel, in order to avoid that users could confuse this
input-frame with already referenced-frames.

Comment 8 lohmaier 2004-11-04 20:06:33 UTC
I suggest starting one over again with this issue. It already grew too confusing.

I try to summarize:
In OOo you can toggle between selection mode (can move red-bordered cell) and
edit mode (can edit formulatext) using <F2>. This is a good thing.

The problem is that OOo still displays the red border when in edit mode (user
tries to move cell but fails). Proposed solution: Use a dotted frame instead of
the red one while in edit mode.

Additional "goodie": don't always use a red border, but use different colors to
select additional cells, like it is the case when viewing an already existing
formula.

Is this correct?

Hi cloph,

thanks for your response in this issue!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
you have said:
"The problem is that OOo still displays the red border when in edit mode (user
tries to move cell but fails). Proposed solution: Use a dotted frame instead of
the red one while in edit mode."

I think you have misunderstood me here: No border around any other cell then the
one which formula is edited should be shown!
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
you have said:
"Additional "goodie": don't always use a red border, but use different colors to
select additional cells, like it is the case when viewing an already existing
formula."

I only have suggested to change the style of this border that can be moved by
cursor keys from red to black_and_dotted.
(Because currently the red border could be confounded with the input-borders
that are displayed if editing already existing formulas.

In order to be "compatible" with the first suggestion in this issue, I suggest
_____while being in edit-mode______, to only show a black_dotted (which is
currently the red-border) while clicking a cell (while
the mouse-button is hold down) and then switching this border off (when
releasing the mouse button).

This would also be convenient with the gaolseek-behaviour:
When insert a reference into the goalseek-window by clicking a cell, the red
border also is only shown while holding down the mouse-button.

------
(But your idea here maybe an a bit more elegant alternative: Coloring referenced
cells and the reference names within the formula "on the fly" while editing
formulas...)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

But the main problem is the first problem: that the border remains although it
has no function (cannot be moved)! This is a bug.
The second problem is more an idea to improve the usability, because red can be
confouned as described...

It's some time ago since I have reported this issue and I have Excel not
installed anymore so I cannot compare Calc and Excel again.

But I think you should now understand what I mean basically.

Please let me know if you understand what I mean and what you think about my
suggestions.
Comment 10 norbert2 2004-11-20 15:07:50 UTC
I don't like the summary of this bug. I suggest to change it to

"Show no reference-input border while editing formulas, like Excel"

since this is the main problem. I have no rights to change the summary :-( ...

It was bad that I have also included the second suggestion (and formerly another
second suggestion that I have revoked now) in the same issue. This only leads to
confusion. Maybe a new issue has to be written...

I suggest to open a new issue since this one is extreme chaotic now...

>I suggest to open a new issue since this one is extreme chaotic now..

yes, please file a new issue (or multiple ones) and post the ID here.

Thank you for your input.

Since this issue is way too complex / too hard to understand I'll close this one
as invalid
