Description pietjonas 2004-03-31 08:13:11 UTC
Make the appearence and placement of docked windows similar to Eclipse:
- Currently docked windows can't overlap (which takes a lot of screen space if
you want to dock them all).
- Let docked windows share the docking area, making only the foreground window
visible in each docking area. Switch between docked windows via tabs.
- Let the user drag docked windows between docking areas.
- Allow the Opening of new dockable windows docked by default (user setting)

This behaviour can be perfectly seen in Eclipse.

- are you referring to the Stylist, Navigator windows, and similar windows?

If yes, these can be docked one over the another adjusting the visibility of
all the windows. see attached pic. The formula and style windows are docked to
the side of the spreadsheet and "stuck".

There is no attachment but I was able to do it myself. I tried to do that before
and failed. The UI for this feature is really hidden (and not properly mentioned
in the help). But in addition to this its not as usable as the Eclipse solution:

-When you dock more than 2 floating windows the space is not enough (on smaller
screens) to see and use them all properly. Instead of dividing the docking space
the windows should overlap and be switchable via tabs. If I want to see two at
once I dock them to different docking areas.

- Only special windows are dockable. There are nonmodal dialogs which aren't
like 'Hyperlinks' but would be great to have.

- There should be a general setting for running OOo in floating window mode or
docking window mode.

I'm writing a text and include some drawings which I create on the fly using the
drawing component of OpenOffice.org. Now I have two navigator windows, two
stylist windows, at least one help window, and a draw and a writer window, too.
When moving the mouse over the screen and touching several windows, the
associated group springs to the front. Unfortunately, the placement of the tool
windows navigator and stylist, change from my previous arrangement to be
partially off-screen (I have fvwm with 9 virtual desktops), or to be somewhere
in the middle of the main application window I want to use (eg squarely over the
text I want to write on).

This I consider a nuisance because it takes me much time to remove these windows
from the main target object, and because I can so easily, and accidentically,
destroy the whole work again by touching the wrong window with my mouse (can
also happen without user interaction, eg. due to cable stiffness).
