Apache OpenOffice (AOO) Bugzilla – Issue 28035
Writer: Inserting images: embedding vs linking
Last modified: 2010-04-19 09:10:45 UTC
the pro and contra
The basic difference between an object that is linked and one that is not is the ability to edit it with another program and have those edits be reflected within the document. Object linking can be very useful and powerful, but it isn't always desired. During inital drafts of a document and during editing, it can be helpful and beneficial to have an object linked to another file/image. As a document nears its final stages, however, it is often a good idea to break links with external files so that objects are simply embedded. This will help ensure that no further changes will be made when they aren't wanted. It is possible to have a living document where many objects continually change and are referenced through a single document using links. A bulletin board of sorts may be created this way. Linked objects can also be used to create a template that is changed often over time or for differing circumstances. The cover of a publication could have a frame surrounding a background that is linked to a generic image measuring 8" x 5" named background.bmp. Any 8" x 5" bmp image could easily be substituted as the background image simply by saving it as a replacement for background.bmp and then updating the link.
Thanks for going through the task list but I think that maybe, just maybe, this is covered in the user guide. If it is not, please use issue 29679 and edit the chapter that needs this and then attach the revised chapter back to the issue. Sure would make my life easier and likely yours too.
IMHO, this is adequately covered in http://wiki.services.openoffice.org/wiki/Documentation/OOo3_User_Guides/Writer_Guide/Adding_images Hence, this issue may be closed as Fixed. /tj/
