Description kelvine 2004-05-02 01:56:24 UTC
Hi,

I am sure there is a logical reason for this, and I am not seeing the bigger
picture.

When I check the Australian English dictionary most single letters are
included. I'm not certain why, as IMHO single letters are generally not works.

So let's accept if the letters are in the dictionary, then they will be seen
from the spellcheck as being correct.

However, further investigation shows the letters "i, m and w" are not in the
dictionary. I would have thought these would have then been marked as
incorrectly spelt.

The reason I raise this is I provided the following example to the users list
recently.

'I would just hate to see a student write something like: "i saw the u at the
farm, o, i thought it looked s funny."

Neither Word or Writer are very helpful in this situation.'

Also in testing this I found, (quoting from my users list email):

'If I type: "This is the letter 'w'." in Word, nothing is marked as spelt
incorrectly. If this sentence is typed into Writer, the "'w'." is marked as
incorrectly spelt. To me this doesn't look quite right.'

As I said, I am sure I am simply not seeing the bigger picture. I thought I
would raise the issue, as I have seen it bother students.

Thanks

Kelvin
