Apache OpenOffice (AOO) Bugzilla – Issue 29131
Indentation problem importing MS Word documents
Last modified: 2013-08-07 14:38:26 UTC
When importing certain MS Word documents from within my organisation, the document is screwed up, see some screenshots at http://www.geocities.com/mtetrode/msword.jpg and http://www.geocities.com/mtetrode/ooo111.jpg In my opinion it has to do with kerning (because when I turn it off, it displays correctly), and possibly with the custom font we use (Syntax), because I have never experienced it with the standard fonts Arial, Times, etc. I have had this with 1.1.0, and recently I upgraded to 1.1.1, and also there the issue is present. The document is available on request.

It really is a kerning problem - I attached a document. I'm sorry that I had to replace all the words in the documents with nonsense words, but these are internal documents not intended to leave the company. When opening it with MSWord 2002 SP2 all is OK, when opening it with OpenOffice 1.1.1 the header styles are wrong. When you select some text and toggle the kerning on or off, OpenOffice seems to rectify itself, and displays the text as it should.
MRU->BH: MS Word has the capability to switch on Font Kerning from a selected FOntsize on. See attached document and open in MS Word. In the font dialog you can see, that there you have Font Kerning from 16pt font height on. This has to be implemented in OO for compatibility.
