Description dcarrera 2004-06-05 00:26:21 UTC
Proposal text for the "cooperative" project.

Project Name: cooperative

Project URL: http://cooperative.openoffice.org

Project Goals (General):

To encourage community involvement, as well as a more cohesive (less fragmented)
OOo community. In particular, by lowering barriers and allowing more flexible
online collaboration. We also want to increase the level of user support for
OOo (we exect that the 2.0 release will see a large increase in the OOo user base).

Project Goals (Specific):

    * Lower the barriers for contribution. In particular, make it easier to
start new community projects, and experiment with new ideas. This involves
trying to provide the supporting technologies that such projects might require.
Some examples include:
          o Plone.
          o Wikis.
          o Mailing lists.
    * Provide a central location for this kind of development (reduce
fragmentation).
    * Encourage other "external" projects (that is, projects hosted off site) to
collaborate together.
    * We want to empower members to take ownership of the project. They must
have the ability to make it evolve into whatever they want. To accomplish this,
it is crucial that powers and roles be spread out widely. Leadership will not
rest on any single individual, but it will be informally spread out among the
most active project members.

Project lead: Me.
Project co-lead: CPH

Cheers,
Daniel Carrera.

Hi
Sorry for the delay in responding here.
I would ask for the proposal to be redrafted and be made more specific. At present, it is making a good
but blurry claim about encouraging contribution to the project (writ large). in my comments on
discuss, I urged that the statement rather focus on establishing a project that coordinates (if possible)
the various satellite sites. The worthy goal of contribution can still be there, but the immediate effect
would be one of coordination.

Daniel, what's the status of this? I'd like to move ahead....

Mind, it can be fairly provisional at first, eg, a claim as to what the narrow goals are, who the members
are (at least at first), and so on.

To clarify: there are two issues here. One is establishing the project on collabnet's server, in the
Incubator category. That project is what I'm mainly concerned with. The second issue is the Plone site
on digitaldistributions. That project needs clarification on a few points, namely, a description of how
files would move back to the CollabNet server, if relevant (it may not be, for all).

To return to the Incubator proect, my suggestion, that the project works to coordinate satellite sites can
be read thusly, that it suggests a protocol for how the satellite sites relate to the original (this too can
be work in progress) and that it lists those satellite sites, or at least the ones we know of (not that
many).

Is this clearer?

hello?
Comment 5 dcarrera 2004-07-12 19:57:15 UTC
This will take a fair bit of work and coordination. It will have to wait until
after my quals.

Cheers,
Daniel.

Okay; can we do this: reassign this to CPH for work? I'm sure he would be okay with monitoring this.
One possibilty is just to use a redirect page for the nonce.

We have no separate projects at Apache, so this issue is no longer a topic.

Close it.
