Apache OpenOffice (AOO) Bugzilla – Issue 30982
text box causes print problem (with test documents)
Last modified: 2013-08-07 15:21:02 UTC
Greetings, Thanks for the great programs! I've notice that OO1.1.2 (only tested this version) has trouble printing some of my Impress documents. It can be fixed by changing a text box (deleting, resizing). The sample sxi and output pdf files will be uploaded when I figure that out. :( Steps to reproduce problem: 1. Open printProblem.sxi with OpenOffice 1.1.2 2. Set Acrobat Distiller page size to 19.5 x 29.5 (File->Print->Properties->Advanced->Paper Size->Postscript Custom Size. Width 19.5, Height 29.5) (File->Print->Properties->Layout->Landscape) 3. Print. (Do not reduce transparency.) A workaround is to delete the text box marked with the large dark arrow. This has been done in the printNoProblem.sxi file. This file prints correctly. I've included pdf output for both printProblem.sxi and printNoProblem.sxi.

Two further bits to add: + Printing to a postscript file reveals the same defects as printing to acrobat distiller. (In other words, the problem is not distiller.) + Another workaround is to turn off the transparency in all objects. (The workaround previously described was to delete or resize special text boxes.) In printProblemPS.zip file I have included the output of printProblem.sxi and printNoProblem.sxi as postscript to demonstrate that the problem is independent of Acrobat Distiller. (printProblem.ps, printNoProblem.ps) In 2noTransparencyFixes.zip is the original printProblem.sxi except that the large arrow now points to the problem objects containing transparency (and named printProblem2(Trans).sxi). The transparency is removed from these objects in printNoProblem2(noTrans).sxi . The output of both files is included in postscript format. The print driver used to produce the ps files is for the "HP DesignJet 800PS3 42". (ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/softlib/software3/pl443/pl-9863-4/pl443en.exe)
Hmm, can't figure out how to create another attachment. I'll keep the attachment around if you want it. The objects containing transparency are in the color coded transparency
Err! The objects containing transparency are in the color coded vector in the first column of printProblem.sxi
I have seen that the last entry in this issue was in July and that it is 1.1.2 related. Have you tried this with a newer version of OOo like 1.1.3, 1.1.4 or some 1.9.xx builds? Does it occur there also? Or have you tried to update the driver of your rinter?
The problem demonstrated in the attachment is present in OO1.1.4 .

confirming this as a new issue.
I can reproduce the bug when I 'print' the file with the acrobat destiller but not when I print the doc in a file. Please have a look.
Hm. Performing a plain printout to file (scaled down to A4 format) works like a charm. I very much suspect the huge page format to be the culprit here (maybe something overflows internally). Will have a look (though this might not qualify for 2.0.1).
Due to resource constraints, this issue was retargeted,
This problem remains in 2.0.2
confirming that the presentation printProblem.sxi does not print correctly in OO 2.1 Also, now there is a regression with OO 2.1 printing printNoProblem.sxi: Where it printed correctly in OO 2.0.2, it prints incorrectly in OO 2.1. Will attach printProblem2_1.zip which includes the erroneous output of printNoProblem.sxi by OO 2.1.

RESOLVED for me as of 2.3 . I've tested for resolution under Windows XP and Debian. Under both OS the problem appears to have been resolved. Thank you whoever made that bugfix! :)
