this is the normal view, the equal sign is present but not visible, if you change zoom you sometimes see it fully and sometimes as a minus (1.63 KB, image/png)

This is the same with font dithering by windows: the equal is barely visible, but on my notebook everything is very had to read (2.63 KB, image/png)

Description scagni 2004-08-27 23:04:01 UTC
The visual rendering of formulas in OO1.1 and later has worsened: while in
Staroffice 5.2 all details of a formula were correctly displayed, now many
details get lost, and changing the zoom factor, unless you enlarge hugely,
merely shows some deatails and hides some others. Typical examples are "plus"
signs rendered as "minus" signs, or "equal" signs showed as "minus" signs, or
"minus" signs that are not showed at all. As you can imagine all these are very
relevant when writing an equation, and it forces the user to move to very high
zooming and back every time he/she wants to write a formula. As an example I
attach two bitmaps of a simple formula in a Calc spreadsheet, at 100% and 103%
zooming: notice that the "plus" sign in the last summation (i square plus i) is
correctly displayed at 103%, but becomes a "minus" at 100%! Besides, at both
zooming levels both the summations do not show the "=" signs below and the
"minus" signs above the capital sigma. You have to zooming at least to 130-140%
to see them. This is a problem when editing the formula, but it is even worse
when you have the formula in a impress presentation document: to avoid showing
apparently incorrect equations, you are forced to show them way too large sometimes.

closing issue.
Delete the font "OpenSymbol" from your system and install OO 1.1.2. There the
font has been corrected and shouldn't give the mentioned problems.
Comment 10 scagni 2004-09-07 09:46:07 UTC
Sorry, I installed 112 to no avail, the formulas are badly displayed as usual. I
again attach a bitmap. Perhaps it works only when you set windows to shows fonts
in grays? I never used the option, I find it gives a worse readability in most
cases. In the attach you can see that in this case the formula shows in a very
faint (almost invisible) way all that should be there.
I do not dare to reopen the issue and make someone angry.... I hope this will
even if the issue remains closed.... thanks to all

Did you delete the OpenSymbol font before installing OO 1.1.2?
Comment 14 scagni 2004-09-10 07:53:37 UTC
Yes, I went to the "fonts" folder of the control panel and deleted it, and after
that I installed OO1.1.2; anyway, here is the info about the opensymbol file
that I have now installed, so you can check if it is the right one:
the file size (from its properties dialog window) is 51.220 byte
it was created on may 5th 2004, at 1.10.00 time.
I hope this can help, thanks for caring
