Description nephila 2004-09-20 13:47:37 UTC
When editing a long(ish) document, e.g. ~25 pages, the performance in writer
degrades quite quickly. It eventually takes over a second to make a key press
before being able to make another. This problem seems to go away temporarily
when writer is shut down and then restarted, this problem doesn't seem to occur
in OOo 1.1.2.

Comment 2 peschtra 2004-10-02 16:16:21 UTC
Can you upload the file this happened with so I can try to duplicate it?
Comment 3 watersrw 2004-10-07 12:01:40 UTC
yeah, happens a lot in m54...the lag...windows and linux versions...not just
with long documents...
Comment 4 estama 2004-10-10 11:42:58 UTC
Windows 2k, Openoffice m54
Happens here too (i just made an account in order to report it. I cannot work without exiting and reopening the document every half hour).
Not just with big documents but with small documents too.

*** Issues 34879, 34969, 34910 are duplicates of this issue***

Somebody at issue 34969 said it happens with build m55 too.

If somebody wants the document i'm working with i can send it to him.

I have experienced the same load on the cpu as at issue 34910.
When i have just opened a document (3 pages long) the load as i type
is neglible. As time goes on the load while i type becomes bigger,
ending (after half an hour) at 60%-70% of total load (OS: Windows 2000 pro).

This is with autocorrection and autocomplete off using
the english Openoffice 680 m54 install.

The document is in the greek language with the styles from
writer2latex:

Can someone confirm this issue? This issue happens to me on XP with smallish
documents (4-5 pages) after a few minutes. There's also a lot of other reports
of this issue as the fair number of duplicates show.
Comment 12 flibby05 2004-10-16 09:22:19 UTC
you may have a look at issue 34644 for a possibly functioning workaround
Comment 13 okapi1253 2004-10-16 15:45:30 UTC
This issue seems resolved for me in 680m56. I didn't see it at all the last 2
days working on Writer docs as compared to how often I saw it in 680m54.
Comment 14 watersrw 2004-10-17 14:49:57 UTC
I have found it in M56, just as in M54.
Comment 15 bobharvey 2004-10-18 10:30:05 UTC
I raised bug 34893 for very slow updating while touchtyping, and have just
downloaded 1.9.56 and tried it. Whilst it still takes an age to load the
applications, in use the sluggish response has vanished.

SBA: Target se to OOo 2.0.
My problem is that we already have different opinions about "THE" problem being
still there or having vanished. So it is obvious that some people have been into
different problems that have "poor performance" in common.

One (known) example: Having a truckload of tracked changes that are NOT shown in
the document is an "efficient prerformance killer" but strongly
documnet-dependant and vanishes if "Edit-Changes-show" is checked.

Of course we'd like to "fix 'em all", but this can be only done one-by one, each
tracked-down problem having a separate issue. So let's track down the problem of
the reporter in this issue.

Once tracked down, people may tell about OTHER performance-related problems and
file issues they can be sure of NOT being a duplicate.

Please note that Office undergoes many changes and fixes at times. In my
words:"a lot of water ran down the river Elbe since 680m54" :-), thus I'd
apreciate 6890m58 (or younger) statements.

What to do:
The submitter (NEPHILA) should give me a reproducible scenario in the latest
available developer snapshot (680m58) and a reference (i.e. "0.1 sec in 1.1.3,
1046 sec in 680m58). Certainly an attached bugdoc would help. If you can't
attach it for privaccy reasons, you may send it to me directly and tell so in
the description. This is NOT an invitation to spam me with documents :-)
Thank you!

I saw this with m54 with various documents on various WinXP machines. But this
works for me in m58, editing the same documents as well as new documents of
comparable lenght.

Hi, the problem is solved in m58! To me it is very evident, that the problem
somehow solved, as the effect is very clear. You hopefully know what fixed it,
don't you? ;-)
Comment 22 stefan.baltzer 2004-11-23 17:28:47 UTC
SBA: The last two comments tell me that I can set this one to Worksforme.
Comment 23 stefan.baltzer 2004-11-23 17:29:29 UTC
SBA: Closed. Please don't reopen this one (see my comments avbove).
But new issues with reproducible scenarios and based on 680m62 or younger are
always welcome :-)
