Description brittonx 2004-10-06 00:43:13 UTC
In Release 1.1.x, the Quickstarter system tray icon's right-click menu showed a
list of the various document types. If you clicked one, a new document of that
type opened up.

In the 2.0 snapshot builds, this feature is missing.
Comment 1 thorsten.martens 2004-10-06 09:31:49 UTC
Feature has been changed ! Works as designed, not a defect !
Comment 2 brittonx 2004-10-07 20:34:13 UTC
Okay, so how do we protest the "design" The old way was very useful. Now it is
a hassle and many more mouse actions to do the same function. To me this is a
step backwards.

This is not a defect ! It´s a change in the design.

and I repeat the Question:

how do we protest the "design" desicion?

in OOo-1.x the quickstart icon had some useful functionality apart frum just
sitting there and occupying space
Comment 6 brittonx 2004-10-29 02:12:47 UTC
I've written a small system tray app that gives us the functionality back. As a
last resort, if the OOo team insists on not giving us this feature, I will
release it for people who still desire the feature.

I read the design spec. basically the OOo team decided to stick to the letter
of the Microsoft UI guidelines. I believe this is generally a bad move. With
OOo 1.1.x it was a great joy to show people how much easier it was to accomplish
tasks than it was with MS Office. In many cases it was HALF the number of mouse
actions required to accomplish the same tasks. Already in OOo 680 builds, it is
taking more mouse clicks to accomplish tasks. This is moving backwards.
Sticking to Microsoft guidelines would make sense if MS Office was the biggest
because they were the best. Unfortunately, Microsoft is the biggest due to
their monopolistic practices. They are not the best at useability.

Also, I have been asking all of my friends and co-workers who are using OOo
1.1.x if they like and use the Quickstarter capability in 1.1.x. Every single
one of them use it and were dismayed to hear it was going away in 2.0. It was
especially upsetting that it was being done just because Microsoft says that's
the way it's supposed to be.

I posted a duplicate as it seems. It was a joy to have these short-cuts. Now it
is harder for me again to encourage other people to use OO.

Hi Brittonx,

Are you ok with providing an URL (and hopefully the source code) for this:

"I've written a small system tray app that gives us the functionality back. As a
last resort, if the OOo team insists on not giving us this feature, I will
release it for people who still desire the feature."

Sounds like people would find it useful. :)

Regards and best wishes,

Justin Clift

"Feature has been changed ! Works as designed, not a defect !"

I would like to know why the feature has been changed. I just can't see when you
have an icon on the tray anyway, why you shouldn't make it a usefull one.
Comment 15 marshall 2005-02-28 11:58:15 UTC
if the patch from brittonx would be available i would like have it. i still
think that this is a defecta there should be a way to review the developers
decision.
Comment 16 marshall 2005-02-28 12:06:15 UTC
and let me make one more point. now there are separate applications for each
part of the OOo. each of them starts the particular application. that is fine.
there is also soffice.exe which when run for the first time opens the empty
window and starts the quickstarter. when the quickstarter is allready started
the empty OOo window will not be open.

what i am trying to say is that opening documents with quickstarter is
anticipated with this application as it was in the past.

Why has it been changed and how can we protest against this.

I moved away from microsoft office a while ago, and i don't like the way
openoffice is getting more and more like microsoft office :?

Sounds like there is some interest in the *old* design.

"the OOo team decided to stick to the letter of the Microsoft UI guidelines." Why?

I think this is a backward step too. What is the reasoning behind this?

"This is not a defect ! It´s a change in the design." is not an answer!

"so how do we protest the "design" The old way was very useful." +1
Comment 23 8daysaweek 2005-03-13 17:09:52 UTC
I have a number of other apps that sit in the system tray and have useful
right-click menus, why shouldn't OOo?
