Apache OpenOffice (AOO) Bugzilla – Issue 39140
auto-save pop-up-Window shouldn't get the input focus
Last modified: 2005-08-16 12:59:49 UTC
When enabling auto-save (which is a good thing), OOo repeatedly bring itself into foreground (when the window had no input focus) to ask whether I'd like to save the document now. This is annoying, because ocasionally you might hit 'y' or 'n' at that moment without realizing to what window you are typing. Therefore I suggest to leave the input focus at other windows if they have it. In Windows/XP applications can cause the item in the task bar to blink if attention is required, but I don't know how to do that, or which methods other GUIs provide.
reassigned to framework component.

Hi windl, thanks for using and supporting OpenOffice.org... This does not happen here using OOo1.1.4 on Solaris. This problem may occur if you - have an untitled doucment opened - didn't uncheck "Prompt to save" in Tools->Options->Load/Save->General set to worksforme...
hi windl, I received your mail... This works as designed. We may handle this as an enhancement wish...
changed summary from "auto-save pup-up changes input focus" to "auto-save pop-up-Windoe shouldn't get the input focus"

I second that enhancement suggestion. OOo grabbing focus this way is highly annoying behavior. And it is dangerous, too, for since OOo grabs focus unregarding of your current typing activity, it can jump (and has) into the foreground while you are typing away in another application. Depending on what keystrokes are caught, this could lead to very strange and unwelcome behavior too fast and unreproduceable for the user who was expecting the text to land somewhere else. And then he has to figure out what it has done to OOo, where the untitled files was saved to and under what name and so on. Not good. It is possible that this concerns all automatically popping dialog boxes in OOo. Highly annoying and unnecessary.
In OO.o 2.0 this dialog will no more appear, it has been removed.
Closed fixed with OO.o 2.0.
