Apache OpenOffice (AOO) Bugzilla – Issue 40166
BiDi control information ignored
Last modified: 2013-08-07 15:21:02 UTC
It seems to be that PowerPoint documents have some way to perform additional BiDi control and fine-tunning (in the same fashion as it is possible with RLE/LRE/LRM/LRM) which is not via BiDi control characters but some custom PowerPoint properties which are not represented on the UI level. Those marks are silently inserted when the user types. OOo Presentation program seems to ignore this information, which causes it to misrender presentations, especially ones with lots of mathematical references. For example, consider the following: "x - ab OF HTGNEL EHT" instead gets rendered as "ab - x OF HIGNEL EHT" since the control characters intended to inhibit "-" and "ab" from joining were ignored.

I've attached one such PowerPoint presentation to demonstrate my point. Since I don't have PowerPoint here, I didn't dare to minimize this testcase for fear that I'll loose valuable attributes during re-saving. The problem can be seen on the 2nd slide -- the 3rd and 2nd lines from the bottom.
Reproducible.
Reassigned to Christian. Please have a look.
Sven, please take over
sj: This Issue is double to issue 23413. BiDi support will be added to our FontWork for OOo 2.0. *** This issue has been marked as a duplicate of 23413 ***
I am sorry for closing this Issue, it is in fact not double to i23413.
Because it is not possible to forecast how long it will last to fix this issue (file format of PPT is not disclosed), I set the target to OOo later.
