Description kmp589 2005-01-29 02:59:05 UTC
When saving a .doc file in OOo 1.9.74 this error comes up: "Error saving the
document xxxx.doc: General Error. General Input/Output Error."

This does not effect the saving of the file, from what I know so far.

Steps to reproduce:
1.) Open a new text document.
2.) Type a short message.
3.) File>Save
4.) Save as a .doc file (Mirosoft Word 97/2000/XP).
5.) Error comes up, can dismiss.
6.) Document can still be opened and edited.
Comment 1 cpettit 2005-02-05 02:21:10 UTC
I was unable to replicate with OOo 1.9.74 running under Windows 2000 SP4.

I tried with your steps without getting an error message. Some variations I
tried include saving the file as a OOo document first, saving it as other Word
type files, saving it without an extension. The only thing I have noticed is
that when I close the program it doesn't tell me that information could be lost
if its not saved in an OOo format as it does in previous versions of OOo.
Comment 2 kmp589 2005-02-05 03:45:03 UTC
I'm running Windows XP, not 2000. Maybe it has something to do with that?
Comment 3 kmp589 2005-02-05 23:32:11 UTC
In addition, after saving, going back and editing the document and resaving,
no error messages come up. I only get a dialog asking me if I want to save it
in Word format (can loose formatting in .doc format). After I hit yes it saves
it fine. Doing Save As and saving it as a different file does not produce an
error message.

Test and confirmed on the following system:
Operating System: Windows XP Home Edition (5.1, Build 2600) Service Pack 2
   System Model: Dell Dimension 4300
   Processor: Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 2.80GHz
   Memory: 1024MB RAM

I was able to confirm this today after several tests and changes to the
replication instructions. However it is hard to reproduce under normal
operating conditions. I believe the situation arises upon an inappropriate
shutdown of the software. I had crashed the system and forced it into autosave
to recover a document. Upon loading this document I followed the directions:
1.	Type some random text
2.	Click File->Save As
3.	Choose Windows 95 (I was unable to confirm Windows 98/2000 formats as
the bug was hard to reproduce)
4.	Choose a name. Upon confirming, an error message as described does pop-
up
5.	The file is saved nonetheless.

Tried build 1.9.74 on WinXP SP2 and could not reproduce the problem.

Follow up test:
In Step 2, instead of typing plain text, I tried to use Color and Tables which
have specific file format codes instead of a plain text message to try and
repro the problem. No Error message.

Maybe the error is caused by certain specific elements (text, formatting,
tables etc.) in the file. It will help if you could provide a description of
the exact contents of the file or attach the file to this report (we can copy
and paste the entire content into a new document and try to save).
Comment 6 kmp589 2005-02-07 22:12:57 UTC
I am using a customized template with 1" margins for all edges (left, right,
top and bottom). It's set as the default template. I also have .doc set as the
default extension for saving. Other than that there's nothing else I
specifically changed.

MRU->MBA: I cannot reproduce the exact problem here, but duscovered another one,
which may be related to this.
When using OO (or SO WITHOUT additional 3rd party filters installed) and trying
to open an MS Word template (.dot, I'll attach a small sample), You'll get an
error message "Read error".
So please have a look at it. Thanks!

I opened the .dot file and did not get the read error specified. You're using
m74, right?

Speaking of which, the same problem also happens in m77, only in m77 it will
not save it at all. That's why I made my other bug report (I marked it a
duplicate of this one even though it probably shouldn't be) a higher priority.

You should probably know that I also have OOo 1.1.3, 1.9.69, 1.9.74 and 1.9.77
installed on here. Maybe that has something to do with it?

Comment 12 Mathias_Bauer 2005-02-10 09:17:21 UTC
Michael, please don't mix up issues.
Can you reproduce the problem of the submitter? Did you try it with StarOffice
only or did you try OpenOffice.org?

If you found another problem, please create a new issue.
Comment 13 kmp589 2005-02-16 03:49:42 UTC
I think I've figured out what's causing it: When it's set to prompt to save it
as a Word document by default, it causes the error. Changing the default save
type to Open Office Document stops the error from coming up, although I can
still save it as a .doc file without problems.

Regardless, the same conditions apply in m77 as in m78.
Comment 14 kmp589 2005-02-18 21:59:50 UTC
Fixed in 680m_79.
Comment 15 kmp589 2005-02-18 22:21:38 UTC
It appears that I may have jumped the gun. It's still in m79, but this time it
allows it to be saved.
Comment 16 michael.ruess 2005-03-11 09:03:23 UTC
With OO 680m84, I am not able to reproduce the problem. Created a new document
based on a .dot file, edited a little bit, saved as .doc file (have MS Word
97/2000/XP .doc as default) -> no error message.
Comment 17 michael.ruess 2005-03-11 09:04:39 UTC
Closed. Another similar (still existing) issue is issue 42870; General
input/output error when saving as HTML.
Comment 18 kmp589 2005-03-12 04:29:49 UTC
This still is not fixed, even in m84. There are certain requirements that MUST
be met in order for the problem to appear:
1.) There must be a user-made template registered in OOo with a .ott extention
2.) The template must be set as the default template
3.) The save format must be .doc for Word 97/2000/XP
Comment 19 michael.ruess 2005-03-14 16:25:10 UTC
MRU->MBA: o.k., finally we got it... the following conditions must be fulfilled
to get the "General input/output error:

1. a user defined template must be set as default template for Writer and
2. the default file format for Writer must be "Word 97/2000/XP"

Then when creating a new document and saving it will lead to the mentioned error
message.
