On opening a broad range of MSOffice .doc files the application quits with
dialogue "an unrecoverable error has occured"

I was not able to find this issue as a bug, which seems strange.

This sounds like issue 30841. This is fixed in OO 1.1.4. Unfortunately, you will
have to wait until 1.1.4 will be ported for MAC.
