Apache OpenOffice (AOO) Bugzilla – Issue 42765
Character spacing problem when printing justified text
Last modified: 2013-08-07 14:38:26 UTC
This problem occurred on my setup and could be reproduced: WinXP Pro (SP1) using OOo 1.14 with an HP Laserjet 1200. It also affects 1.9.69 and 1.9.74 (I have tested it in all these versions). I printed text that used the justified alignment and the printer gave out odd spacing bteween the individual characters of words. Sometimes it looked like there was an additional space in the midst of a word while there wasn't. Although I tried to print out the text in various formats (using .doc formats under OOo), the odd spacing was taking place the same way all the time. When I converted the document to pdf (using either inbuilt or extendedPDF), the spacing came out fine. This is a serious bug and needs to be addressed, otherwise people will take a look at their papers from the printer and say: OOo is not working as it should. It does not provide WYSIWYG.
SBA: This is a problem on Windows, so probably NOT a gsl issue. Changed Component to Word processor and reassigned to me. SBA->finch_urder: This is by far NOT a P1 issue. Prio changed to P3. Please give further information: 0. Please attach the file. 1. What happens if the document is left-aligned (instead of justified) 2. What happens if you use a different font? 3. Please do a "Print to file" and attach that data too. 4. What happens to justified text of the same font when you use Calc for printing?

sorry: version 6 went trough twice...
and also version 2...don't know what happened...
Thanks for your swift reply. I did some testing. I printed the same text in various formats both on paper and as file (you find them them attached). As I see it from paper over here, I find faulty spacing in versions 2 ("Here is one possible answer...question": 5 wrong spacings, always at the beginning of the words, between the 1st and the 2nd character) and 5 ("goals", again between 1st and 2nd character). In version 7, which is where I went back to the settings of version 2, I get the exact same spacing faults. I then did one test in Calc and could not find any faulty spacing. Upon converting version 2 (or 7, as you like it) to pdf,I did not get any spacing errors. I have attached the various .prn files (I hope you can see what I see on paper here), the text in version 2/7 (.sxw) and its conversion to .pdf, as well as the print to file version of the pdf. I do think this it a very important issue, as an experience like this destroys a lot of confidence in the software used and the printing of documents is a key feature of the writer application. Thanks once again. I hope the files are helpful...
Works fine with my LaserJet 1200. Downloaded and printed "Mon Feb 14 12:12:00 -0700 2005: version 2 or seven.sxw", but could not see any spacing issues. A scan of my result has been attached for your review. Certainly could not see the spacing issues shown in your PRN files, which I viewed with http://www.swiftview.com/viewer.htm, since the files are PCL not PS. My platform is Windows XP SP2; OOo 1.9.118; built-in print drivers; USB connection. Test page shows: Driver 5.00; unires.dll 5.2.370.120; hpcfont.dll 1.0.33.0; hpcstr 1.0.33.0.

Latest comment app 3 years ago. Anything new here? @finch_urder: Still a problem for you?
Closing issue due to reporter's inactivity as WFM. Please feel free to reopen this issue if you find out that the problem still exists in the latest release of OOo.
