Confirmed with bitstream vera size 12, also other sizes/fonts. Using the italic
button does...nothing, that I can see. Using X11 X.org 6.8.2.

Quick addendum, this only affects font "Bitstream Vera Serif", the default font,
all sizes. The other fonts work fine.

duplicate.
Italics/Bold has to be provided by the font. 
If not OOo must fake the italics/bold (currently OOo can only do this when
printing/exporting to PDF)
