Apache OpenOffice (AOO) Bugzilla – Issue 4849
Entering formula editing mode also with '+' and '-', not only with =
Last modified: 2013-08-07 15:15:02 UTC
Some spreadsheet users are used to enter formulas by preceding them with a +. This is more comfortable (1) for the keyboards where the + can be reached more easily than the = (2) for the operations which are sums (entering +a1+b2 is `better´ than having to enter =a1+b2). Is it possible to add + to the list of keys recognized as formula editing more triggers?
Hi Falko, I think we had such an Issue, but can not find it. So 1 4 U. Frank

As suggested in issue 6615, marked as duplicate of this, both + and - should be accepted as formula starters (I'm posting this additional comments to make sure this particular "extra" doesn't get lost with the duplicate marking).
My two votes for this one, it'd be so useful! (it's all about workflow.) thx for listening... Gabriel Gazzán

I concur: We should behave like Excel. Entering a + will add the value of the refrenced cell (behind the +) and a - will substract the value of the refrenced cell (behind the -)
Addendum: Quattro Pro 11 has this feature, too.
I agree with comment Additional Comments From Namor67 2003-07-29 19:36 PDT So I change summary. As far as I know EXCEL does not support formulas starting with "+" or "-". Can an EXCEL expert (or owner) check that? If I am right this must be considered for "save as XLS" by adding "=" at the beginning of the formula for ".XLS". Because of this I add keyword "ms_interoperability" I still see the problem in 1.1RC3 German version WIN98SE: 645m15(Build8669) [CWS:ooo11rc3] so I change Version. Rainer
Excel 2002 supports this feature. Hello Niklas, I also think this is a useful enhancement. Please give approval for this evaluated OO.o 2.0 flagged issue. If you confirm with the target OO.o 2.0, then please keep it on your owner (or the owner of the concerning developer) for implementation. In case you want this issue for 'OOo Later', then please reset the target milestone. If you decline the issue finally, please set the resolution to 'Wontfix' (but do not close). In case of 'OOo Later' or 'Wontfix' please reset it on Bettina's owner. Thank you.
Already have the PCD issue 20496 for this. *** This issue has been marked as a duplicate of 20496 ***
closing.
change your votes! :)
Hm, today I tried an daw, that my I checked with 1.1.0 German version WIN98SE: 645m19(Build8693) accepted an entry '+12' or '-5' alternatively to '=+12' or '=-5' Funny thing, I never saw that before, but I did not try for a long time. Does that mean we can make these issues WFM? Rainer
+12 or -5 is *number* recognition, not *formula* recognition. Try +5-2 as opposed to =5-2.
Hi Guiseppe, O yes, how stupid of me: '+5-2' still does not work. Rainer
