Description pmscott 2005-05-04 08:49:14 UTC
A short vowel mark on the last letter of a line of arabic disappears both from
the screen and the printed copy when a word wrap occurs anywhere within the
paragraph. The vowel mark is still present but does not display.

If the last word on the line is followed by a non-break space character (or even
an ordinary space at the end of the paragraph), the vowel does display.
However a vowel mark immediately preceding a non-break space after a word wrap
does not display, and the vowel mark at the end of a paragraph on the same line
as the non-break space re-appears.

The vowel marks can always be seen by enabling the viewing of non-printing
characters, specifically spaces (selected on the "Formatting Aids" page of the
"Tools > Options" dialog). Hypothesis: arabic vowel marks are being treated
incorrectly as spaces by the word-wrapping algorithm.

The test case contains four paragraphs. The first simply contains the single
Arabic word "kitaabun" (a book) illustrating how it should appear. The second
shows the disappearance of the final "dammatan" vowel mark from the last word of
the line when word-wrapping occurs. The third paragraph demonstrates how a
non-break space after the word acts as a work-around for the problem. The fourth
illustrates how further problems arise when the non-break space wraps onto the
next line.

Please remember that Arabic is read right to left!

Reassigned to SBA.

A couple of furhter comments:

This issue also occurs in OOo 1.1. I had hoped it might be fixed in 2.0 :).

This is not a major issue for most Arabic users as it is not normal to include
the short vowel marks in Arabic writing. It will mostly affect struggling Arabic
learners like myself!

ja->hdu: please take a look
Comment 6 Raphael Bircher 2008-07-07 09:56:00 UTC
This issue is a bug from a version befor 2.0 No one has posted new info about
more then two years. For my point of view, we can close it. I will talk with sba
on the IRC channel.

The bug still exists in version 2.4.1 (just confirmed by opening the test case).
Although I appreciate that it will not affect a large number of users, it is a
significant irritation to those who do use OpenOffice to write in Arabic.

SBA->HDU: As discussed, reproducible in DEV300_m24 on Windows. Does NOT occur on
Linux.
Confirming issue, resassigned to HDU.
