Description simford 2005-05-13 08:11:49 UTC
steps to re-produce:
1. create an address list, three entries
2. start Mail Merge Wizard from Tools menu
3. use "Create a new document" in the first step
4. use address list created above, in the 3rd step
5. use "Save merged document" in the 8th step
   click "Save Documents" button
and save to a new file in .odt or .sxw
6. use the default settings in other steps.
7. open that file
8. change to "Page Preview" mode

Expected Results:
1. Three pages only
2. when click on the 3rd page,
should see "Page 3/3" on status-bar

Actual Results:
1. we get five pages, the 2nd and 4th ones are empty
2. when click on the 3rd page,
   status-bar shows "Page 1 3/5"
click on 4th page, it shows "Page 2 4/5"
   5th page, it shows "Page 1 5/5"

I still don't understand why this is a feature.
When I save as the seperate documents,
then I only get three files(one page per file).
But when I save as a merged document,
then I get 5 pages. :(

Further more, even if the blank pages are the feature.
How about the page info in the status bar?
Do you think "Page 2 4/5" is the correct info?
wierd!
Comment 5 h.ilter 2005-05-27 10:15:25 UTC
HI->OS: We should really find a solution to prevent such confusion.

Isn't it the same problem as issue 3910? You need the empty pages on a duplex
printer, otherwise you get a letter to one person on the back of the letter to
another person.
Comment 8 sci 2005-10-28 12:53:24 UTC
Same problem still existing in OO 2.0 (not RC but final).
Comment 9 samphan 2005-11-15 08:50:08 UTC
I run into this problem and found this issue.
If I use double-sided printing feature of my printer, fine. But some people
might not have such printer. If I use single-sided printing, I can overcome the
problem by printing only the right page.
However, looking at print preview and see blank pages is unfriendly. Having to
use such trick (printing only right pages) is unfriendly too.

IMO, there should be an option to turn this blank pages feature on/off. Lacking
such UI should be considered a bug.

I agree. It is good design, actually. If only we knew why the behaviour...
I have seen a dx printer only once; they're not popular here in Norway anyway.
Maybe a little "Insert a blank page if needed by duplex printers" or something
like that, checked by default maybe. I got very confused anyway. Is there a way
to disable this at present? The only way I find is to do this at Print time:
Go Print, choose Options then uncheck "Right pages" from the "Pages" section, to
print only left- [presumably odd-number-] pages.
If someone can get this on the wishlist for UI improvements it would be great,
though. Maybe a line in the help file, too? It doesn't say too much about why
the blank pages.
It's a _bit_ annoying having to remove every second sheet from a big stack of
letters; worse even if someone printed directly to envelope via the
print-fold-and-put-in-envelope-machine... :) 500 unusable letters for every 500
good ones :P

I see the feature for duplex-printing. But I think it should be possible to
chose how the merged documents have to be created.
Actually the first paragraph of each merged record receives the paragraph-format
"insert break" and "with page style".
I think it should be the way, that normaly only the "insert break"-option should
be used. If you want a special page-style to be used, that should be possible
either by activating it in the first paragraph of the basic document or with a
paragraph-style that would be assigned to the first paragraph.
Comment 12 Oliver Specht 2006-08-23 13:30:48 UTC
The setting of break with page style _and_ new page number is necessary to let
each new document part start with the correct page number. This start at page 1
is the reason for the switch to a left page.

But how do I do a PDF export which only exports the right page? Is there a
feature missing?
Comment 14 Oliver Specht 2007-09-24 11:44:05 UTC
->helgekraak: Not that it matters but why do you want to create a PDF from a
result document of a mail merge? The intention of mail merge is IMO that you
want either print the letters, send them via e-Mail or in rare cases manually
give the merges as single documents to the receivers.
The combined result of all pages just makes it easy to check the outcome of the
merge before mailing/printing/separating the parts.

PDF export options are a different story anyway and should be filed as a new
issue - if there is none already.

BTW: The option not to print empty pages is already available in
tools/options/OOo Writer/Print (and in File/Print/Options) "Print automatically
inserted pages"

Changing resolution to wontfix.
