Apache OpenOffice (AOO) Bugzilla – Issue 51020
Arabic-Hindi numerals according to context
Last modified: 2013-08-07 15:00:01 UTC
It is crucial for Arabic users to be able to write both Hindi and Arabic numerals in the same document. It is essential to add a feature in the General Options of Complex Text Layout, that allows numerals to be displayed according to the context. United Nations documents (see link above and compare numerals wile opening the docmument in MS Word and Writer) are examples of such situations. Inside an Arabic document, numerals should be in Hindi, while other numerals referring to English symbols or codes should be in Arabic numerals. A few UN Organizations are now migrating to Linux. This feature will prevent many others, including the United Nations Secretariat, from migrating to linux or open source software. This issue should also be considered in connection with other issues such as adding a list of auto-numbering according to the system used in International Organizations (which I can provide upon request), as well as the possibility of copying Arabic numerals from an English text and pasting them in Hindi numerals in an Arabic document and vice-versa. Thanks for your time and effort. Yasser Chaddad
