"Cascading" templates

Perhaps documents could be linked with multiple templates, in an ordered list, with settings "cascading" through the list in a similar fashion to cascading style sheets (CSS). This would also be similar to the way that styles currently work within OOo: each style is "linked with" a predecessor (which may, of course, have its own predecessor) and inherits any non-overridden formatting from there.
