The execution of macros needs to be undo'able by the user.

I would suggest, that in general, actions of a macro should _not_ be added to
the undo stack. Instead the programmer of the macro should be given the ability
to add entries to undo/redo/repeat and to define a macro that has to be started,
when the user selects one of these entries.

Sounds like a good idea to me.  Perhaps a global switch at the component level
to turn on/ff macro actions being added to the stack would give the most
flexibility.
